Spring 2021 - CM561 A1 & B1: Social Media Management - This class explores social media through seven key frameworks. The Historical Framework gives students a deeper understanding of how communications channels evolved into mass media, and later into social media. The Cultural Framework applies specific communication, social and psychological theories to the study of new media. The Functional Framework explores how and why people (and corporations) use social media. The Procedural Framework begins the class' study of how new media has shaped business operations and the communications process. The Organizational Framework continues the discussion of the business context for social media and introduces the need for social media management. The Technology Framework helps students understand and categorize the thousands of social networks, tools and platforms that have emerged as new media has matured. 561 C1: Entertainment Marketing surveys the modern media landscape to explore strategies, tactics, techniques, communications, emerging technologies, and business models employed in marketing entertainment. To understand the business, how it is changing, and how to prepare yourself for change yet to come, we begin by looking back at the evolution of the entertainment industry. Then we dig into today's major media, entertainment and technology companies to see the elements of marketing campaigns - advertising, publicity, promotion, and research and discover how the business operations of these various companies shape their focus and impact creative decisions. The first weeks of the class lay the foundation for a subsequent series of weekly case studies on major companies. Looking at marketing through the lens of several industry leaders reveals similarities, differences, and competitive advantages between companies. This semester will be conducted as an asynchronous class with plenty of opportunities for students to research topics and share their findings with the class. Guest speakers will occasionally add their perspectives. Feature films and television are the primary focus of this class; however, we have the opportunity to include music, sports, and fashion, depending on student interests.
