CAS AH 215: Arts of Africa and Its Diaspora
Exploration of a diversity of visual and performing arts from Africa, including royal regalia, masquerades, and contemporary painting. Examines how the dispersal of Africans, due to the transatlantic slave trade and immigration, contributed to the cultural richness of the Americas. CAS AH 225: The Arts of Asia
Surveys of the major artistic traditions of Asia. Important monuments are examined analytically in order to explain why certain forms and styles are characteristic of specific times and places, and how these monuments functioned in their cultural contexts. CAS AH 228: Arts of the Silk Road
This course is an introduction to the arts along the "Silk Roads". Focusing on objects situated in-between cultures and societies, students explore important questions of cultural exchange, trade, diplomacy, faith, identity, and gender. Tracing the production and circulation of artworks along landbound and maritime trade routes, from Samarkand to Manila, students engage with and reflect upon deep connections between local communities and global networks. CAS AH 232: Archaeology of Ancient Egypt
The technology, economy, social life, political organization, religions, art, and architecture of Egypt from Predynastic times through the Hellenistic period, based on archaeological and historical sources. Focuses on architecture, manuscript illumination, metalwork and ivory carving, wall-painting, textiles and monumental architectural sculpture. CAS AH 313: Imperial Reflections: Early Modern Islamic Art and Architecture
Architecture, manuscripts, textiles, metalwork, and ceramics of the Mughal, Ottoman, and Safavid Empires. Focus on the formation of imperial styles, intersections between art and politics, and the importance of the arts in dynastic legitimization. CAS AH 317: From Morocco to Timbuktu: Art and Architecture at the Saharan Crossroads
Cultural exchange between North and West Africa, and its impact on art and architecture from the medieval period to the present; the interaction between Islam and other modes of African religious practice and how this interaction influenced African aesthetic expression. CAS AH 323: Topics in Latin American Art
Study of a region, theme, or period in Latin America art and architecture. May be repeated for credit as topics change. Topic for Fall 2021: Utopian Modernismos: Avant-Garde Practices in Latin America. This course studies avant- garde practices and the utopian role assigned to visual arts in Latin America during the twentieth century. We study vanguard movements including Social Realism, Indigenism, Mexican Muralism, Geometric Abstraction, Mass-Mediatic interventions, and Art-ivism, among others. -
CAS AH 326: Arts of Japan
The arts of Japan, from prehistory to the twentieth century. Lectures intend to cover a broad range of media (painting, sculpture, ceramics, prints) and building types (temples, palaces, castles, teahouses). Special attention is paid to major projects integrating multiple forms. Explores major works of Chinese art, from bronze vessels, Buddhist caves, ink painting, to contemporary performance. Addresses topics such as constructions of monumentality, cultural exchange, displays of power, literati identity, feminine space, and quests for modernization. CAS AH 361: Southern Baroque Art
Explores transformations in painting, sculpture, and architecture of late sixteenth and seventeenth centuries in Italy, Spain, and France. Emphasis on Caravaggio, Bernini, Poussin, and Velazquez in the contexts of the Counter- Reformation, papal and royal patronage, and artistic agency.
