CFA FA 520: Career Development in the Arts
A blend of self-exploration and business skills that encourages arts leaders to "think like an entrepreneur" in defining their career and personal brand. Develop entrepreneurial skills like branding, networking, marketing, and budgeting. Learn financial basics, tools, and analysis. Apply quantitative reasoning skills to make informed decisions, and oral communication skills to be more persuasive and understood in everyday life. Students will apply these skills to all personal endeavors, from landing a dream job to building your own brand. Effective Fall 2019, this course fulfills a single unit in each of the following BU Hub areas: Quantitative Reasoning I, Oral and/or Signed Communication. -
CFA FA 530: Collaborative Arts Incubator
The Collaborative Arts Incubator is a hands-on studio experience and a cross-disciplinary course that offers students within CFA and BU the opportunity to work together on innovative, creative projects. Students work in groups drawing from their own disciplines and are encouraged to venture into unfamiliar creative territories. Students engage in active collaboration, critical thinking and peer interaction with at-risk populations in the surrounding community. The social justice component is a significant element of the course. -
CFA FA 540: Arts and Culture in Mexico: Revolution to the Present
The density of Mexican cultural productions, allows a unique understanding of its history and current events through the exploration of artistic works. In this multidisciplinary course students will be exposed to art works in all disciplines, focusing on major artistic creators but also open to popular culture; the great muralists and street artists, film masterpieces and telenovelas, the symphonic music of Chavez and Revueltas, the collaboration of Mexican and foreign artist in concert music, film, but also in the integration of rock bands like Molotov. Cultural history and cultural studies will provide the critical tools for analysis and contextualization. The class will also look into artists interaction with power, the creation of cultural policies and institutions. 4cr -
CFA FA 550: Arts Internship
Designed to allow sophomores, juniors, and seniors in the Arts Leadership Minor to receive course credit while working in a professional setting. Internships provide exposure to a workplace environment and offer the opportunity to use creative problem solving skills. Effective Fall 2019, this course fulfills a single unit in the following BU Hub areas: The Individual in Community, Digital/Multimedia Expression. -
CFA FA 560: The Creative Economy and Social Impact
This course explores the creative economy & social impact and where creative professionals intersect with placemaking, industry, and cultural entrepreneurship. The course covers a variety of topics including: creative placemaking; the artist as entrepreneur; business and leadership models for the creative industries. All topics are explored with a Social Impact lens. Through case studies, guest speakers, readings, and group exercises, students learn about innovative entrepreneurial initiatives that straddle the boundaries between the private, nonprofit, and public sectors. Guided exercises enable students to assess and develop their skills as future social impact and change agents using an entrepreneurial mindset. -

CFA ME 203: Introduction to Music Teaching and Learning
Development of a personal orientation to music teaching and learning through course readings, discussions, observations of varied music teaching contexts, and peer teaching experiences. Critical exploration of contemporary music education practices. Includes an exploration of music teacher identity and an overview of the historical, philosophical, psychological, and sociological foundations of music education. CFA ME 261: Jazz 1: Performance & Context
Open to non-music majors and music majors for elective credit with advisor approval. Introduction to the American musical art form through recordings, videos, discussion, concerts and workshops; also an introduction to the role of jazz in education. 2 cr. -

CFA ME 307: Secondary General Music Methods
Philosophical foundations and objectives of music programs in grades 5 through 12. Development of teaching materials and presentation of representative lessons; techniques of analysis and evaluation. Learners will participate in a semester-long Living Learning Community alongside Boston- residents as a way to study local and global issues that may be addressed by art educators 2cr. CFA ME 374: Arts Engagement: Cultivating a Deeper Relationship with the Natural Environment to Foster Sustainable Life-Ways
In this course, you will explore the arts to contemplate nature, identify unsustainable practices, propose viable alternatives, and share your results with the community via a multimedia arts exhibit. This course is open to juniors/seniors of any major and ability. CFA ME 410: Practicum Seminar
Required for undergraduate and graduate Music Education students registered for Practicum. First semester seminar topics will include development of an educational philosophy, resume preparation, job interviewing, and classroom behavior management. Second semester seminar topics include a refresher on job interviewing, assessment, public and parental relations, and music program advocacy. Case study sessions will help seniors analyze complicated classroom situations. Students will be guided through the teacher licensure process and readied for entry into the music education job market. 0 cr. 2 semesters. -
CFA ME 411: Practicum 1 K-5
Pre-K-5. Supervised student teaching in grades K-5, weekly seminar, individual conferences with University supervisor. Prior to student teaching practicum, students must complete all licensure courses with a grade of C or higher, earn a minimum CUM GPA of 2.70, and pass the Massachusetts Tests for Teacher Licensure (MTEL).Six weeks; minimum 150 hours required. 4 cr. each semester. -

Supervised student teaching in 5-8; weekly seminar, minimum of 150 clock hours; weekly seminar; individual conferences with University supervisor. Prior to student teaching practicum, students must complete all licensure courses with a grade of C or higher, earn a minimum CUM GPA of 2.70, and pass the Massachusetts Tests for Teacher Licensure (MTEL). 4 cr. each semester. -
CFA ME 413: Practicum 3 8-12

CFA ME 440: Music Education Lab Instrumental
Required for all music education majors (3 semesters, one per year). These laboratories are designed to prepare students to provide group (classroom) instruction in instrumental music. Students progress through a variety of experiences that include, but are not limited to, techniques and pedagogical principles of beginning instruction on winds, strings, and percussion instruments; score preparation/analysis, conducting, and rehearsal procedures for various levels and instrumentations; and teaching individuals of differing abilities. 3 credits, repeatable, maximum of 9 credits. -
CFA ME 441: Music Education Lab Choral
Required for all music education majors (2 semesters, one per year). Within a laboratory environment focused on peer teaching, video recording, and just-in- time feedback, instruction in vocal/choral methods progresses through a variety of music teacher preparation experiences, including but not limited to: understanding how the voice works in speaking and singing; voice development across the lifespan; caring for the voice; using singing as a model in any music teaching situation; incorporating appropriate vocal technique into choral rehearsal; selection of choral repertoire to promote artistic development; score preparation/analysis; conducting; and rehearsal procedures. Also incorporated will be use of the school chorus or group voice class as an appropriate environment for English Language Learners. 3 credits, repeatable, to a maximum of 6 credits. -
CFA ME 445: Technology for Musicians
Students will obtain essential skills in technologies to support music careers. Topics will include computer notation, audio and MIDI recording and editing, document design, self-promotion and responsible uses of social media. Students will also explore technologically enhanced and supported performance. Effective Fall 2018, this course fulfills a single unit in the following BU Hub area: Digital/Multimedia Expression. -
CFA ME 460: Special Topics in Music Education
Topics will vary by semester. Topics include such diverse areas as teaching marching band, beginning jazz improvisation, producing musicals, etc. 1 credit, repeatable to a maximum of 5 credits.
