Philosophical foundations and objectives of music programs in grades 5 through 12. CFA ME 543: Special Topics in Music Education Technology: Notation with Sibelius
ME543: Special Topics in Music Education Technology: Notation with Sibelius will focus on skill development with notation software. Students will develop advanced skills with techniques in notation software including multi-voice staves, part creation, custom styles, and page formatting. No prior experience with Sibelius or other notation software is expected. Students will be required to have access to their own installation of the latest version of Sibelius. -
CFA ME 545: Power, Marginalization, and Privilege in Music Education
This course is designed to expand awareness of the intersections between music, education, and society as they relate to issues of power, privilege, and marginalization within US, educational, and global contexts. Students will participate in group discussions, individual reflection, and student-designed projects to increase awareness of their own biases and assumptions and deepen reflective practice in music making and teaching. Upon completion of the course, students should be better prepared to engage in acts of social justice, transform structural biases, build coalitions to effect change, and advocate for marginalized students in their own care. -
CFA ME 548: Arts Integration: Interdisciplinary Approaches that Support Holistic Learning
To model real-world arts-integration implementation, students will engage in team-based learning and project development between arts and non-arts subjects, and/or between the arts disciplines. Collaborative projects will be informed by the histories, theories, philosophies, approaches, and exemplars of arts integration programs in North America. -
CFA ME 610: Practicum Seminar
Required for undergraduate and graduate Music Education students registered for Practicum. First semester seminar topics will include development of an educational philosophy, resume preparation, job interviewing, and classroom behavior management. Second semester seminar topics include a refresher on job interviewing, assessment, public and parental relations, and music program advocacy. Case study sessions will help seniors analyze complicated classroom situations. Students will be guided through the teacher licensure process and readied for entry into the music education job market. 0 cr. 2 semesters. -
CFA ME 611: Practicum 1 K-5
Pre-K-5. Supervised student teaching in grades K-5, weekly seminar, individual conferences with University supervisor. Prior to student teaching practicum, students must complete all licensure courses with a grade of C or higher, earn a minimum CUM GPA of 2.70, and pass the Massachusetts Tests for Teacher Licensure (MTEL).Six weeks; minimum 150 hours required. 4 cr. each semester. -

CFA ME 640: Music Education Lab Instrumental
These laboratories are designed to prepare students to provide group (classroom) instruction in instrumental music. Students progress through a variety of experiences that include, but are not limited to, techniques and pedagogical principles of beginning instruction on winds, strings, and percussion instruments; score preparation/analysis, conducting, and rehearsal procedures for various levels and instrumentations; and teaching individuals of differing abilities. 3 credits, repeatable, maximum of 6 credits. -
CFA ME 641: Music Education Lab Choral
Within a laboratory environment focused on peer teaching, video recording, and just-in- time feedback, instruction in vocal/choral methods progresses through a variety of music teacher preparation experiences, including but not limited to: understanding how the voice works in speaking and singing; voice development across the lifespan; caring for the voice; using singing as a model in any music teaching situation; incorporating appropriate vocal technique into choral rehearsal; selection of choral repertoire to promote artistic development; score preparation/analysis; conducting; and rehearsal procedures. Also incorporated will be use of the school chorus or group voice class as an appropriate environment for English Language Learners. 3 credits, repeatable, to a maximum of 6 credits. -
CFA ME 645: Technology for Musicians
Open to all Music majors. Within a computer laboratory setting, students will obtain essential skills in technologies to support music careers. Topics will include basic computer notation, audio recording and editing, MIDI recording and editing, media-rich web development, document design, self-promotion and responsible uses of social media. Students will also explore technologically enhanced and supported performance. Open to the BU Community. 2 credits. -
CFA ME 661: Jazz History and Performance Techniques 1
Open to non-music majors and music majors for elective credit with advisor approval. Introduction to the American musical art form through recordings, videos, discussion, concerts and workshops; also an introduction to the role of jazz in education. 2 cr. -
CFA ME 701: History and Philosophy in Music Education: Perspectives and Practice
Introduction to historical and philosophical foundations of music education. An intensive reading and research seminar course in the history of educational thought and practices in music education in the United States from the Colonial Period to modern times. The course has two distinct disciplinary components; historical research and philosophical discourse in music education. -
CFA ME 702: Psychology and Sociology in Music Education: Perspectives and Applications
The purpose of this course is to critically examine psychological and sociological concepts as they relate to music and education. Topics include key issues and concepts in psychology and sociology; psychology as related to music educational processes; problems encountered in the sociology of music education; and cultural influences that affect both the psychology of the individual and sociological aspects of group dynamics. 4.0 credits. -
CFA ME 711: Introduction to Music Education Research
Overview of music education research. Research design and methodology to include development of hypotheses, problems and subproblems, qualitative research, survey, observational, causal comparative, experimental, evaluation, and historical research. Ability to understand, interpret, and use research in teaching and learning. Designed primarily for master's degree students. -
CFA ME 740: Introduction to Music Education Research
In this course, students become acquainted with a variety of research that informs music education, learn both to critique and apply that research, and develop their scholarly writing skills. -
CFA ME 741: History and Philosophy in Music Education: Perspectives and Practice
The purpose of this course is to examine and discuss historical and contemporary philosophical ideas and problems in music and music education. A goal is for students to develop a sharpened sensitivity to past and present thought (primarily, but not limited to historical and philosophical thought) in the field of music education in order to better inform their own curricular and instructional choices.
