  • CAS LS 111: First-Semester Spanish
    For students who have never studied Spanish, or by placement test results. Introduction to grammatical structures. Emphasis on aural comprehension, speaking, and pronunciation. Introduction to Hispanic culture. Lab required.
  • CAS LS 112: Second-Semester Spanish
    Completes study of basic grammatical structures. Emphasis on speaking and aural comprehension. Readings on contemporary Hispanic culture. Writing assignments. Lab required.
  • CAS LS 123: First-Year Spanish
    For beginners only. Intensive equivalent of one year of college Spanish.
  • CAS LS 211: Third-Semester Spanish
    Completes study of grammatical structures of Spanish. Use of spoken language in conversation. Reading in Hispanic civilization and of contemporary short stories. Writing exercises involving more complex grammatical and syntactical patterns.
  • CAS LS 212: Fourth-Semester Spanish
    Review of the structures of Spanish. Intensive practice of spoken language. More advanced readings from Hispanic culture. Frequent compositions. Satisfactory completion of CAS LS 212 fulfills the CAS language requirement. This course fulfills a single unit in the following BU Hub area: Global Citizenship and Intercultural Literacy.

  • CAS LS 241: Cultures of Spain: Past and Present
    An introduction to Spanish civilization with special emphasis on history, art, and literature. The course begins in English and shifts gradually into Spanish as students' fluency increases. It is enriched by visits to the Prado Museum, Segovia, Toledo, and other sites. Evaluation is based on three exams and/or papers. This course fulfills a single unit in each of the following BU Hub areas: Historical Consciousness, Global Citizenship and Intercultural Literacy.

  • CAS LS 309: Spanish for Heritage and Native Speakers
    This course is designed for heritage speakers. This includes students who do not claim a Hispanic background but who have grown up more or less bilingually and/or have lived part of their lives in Spanish-speaking settings. It aims to enrich the learners' cultural, formal and academic knowledge of Spanish through readings, videos, and short films. Effective Fall 2019, this course fulfills a single unit in each of the following BU Hub areas: The Individual in Community, Global Citizenship and Intercultural Literacy, Writing-Intensive Course.

  • CAS LS 310: Spanish for the Professions
    Not open to students for whom Spanish is a first language. Students may take up to two 300- level Spanish language courses (LS 306, LS 307, LS 308, LS 310, LS 311) before moving on to higher levels. Any combination of two 300-level courses may be taken for credit, provided the two courses have different course numbers; repeating a course with the same number is not allowed. Advanced study of Spanish as used by the professions in the Spanish-speaking world. Analysis and discussion of intercultural professional communication, acquisition of specialized vocabulary. Students develop linguistic and cultural competence by exploring a variety of texts and mediums. Effective Fall 2019, this course fulfills a single unit in each of the following BU Hub areas: Global Citizenship and Intercultural Literacy, Oral and/or Signed Communication.

  • CAS LS 311: Spanish Through Performance: The Theater of Everyday Life
    Not open to students for whom Spanish is a first language. Students may take up to two 300- level Spanish language courses (LS 306, LS 307, LS 308, LS 310, LS 311) before moving on to higher levels. Any combination of two 300-level courses may be taken for credit, provided the two courses have different course numbers; repeating a course with the same number is not allowed.   • CAS LS 312: Spanish Through Cultural Destinations: Madrid en Vivo
    Students improve Spanish oral and written language skills while exploring Madrid. Activities are held at different sites throughout the city which serve as the principle basis for class work. The students' work is published on the class blog.
  • CAS LS 350: Introduction to Analysis of Hispanic Texts
    Development of techniques for reading and interpreting Hispanic literary texts; reading of lyric poetry, drama, and fictional narrative. Carries humanities divisional credit in CAS. This course fulfills a single unit in each of the following BU Hub areas: Aesthetic Exploration, Global Citizenship and Intercultural Literacy.

    Topic for Fall 2019: Poets at Work. Reflections by modern Spanish poets on the psychological and social uses of their work. Readings from the poems and poetics of foundational figures (Miguel de Unamuno, Juan Ramon Jimenez, Antonio Machado) and some of their contemporary disciples.
  • CAS LS 452: Topics in Latin America Literature and Culture
    Topic for Spring 2020: The Third World as Ruins. Departing from Cuban writer Antonio Jose Ponte, this course studies the "debris of the present." The relationship between ruins and memory, catastrophe and hope, urban space and literature, cinema and ethnography in Latin America.
  • CAS LS 454: Survey of Nineteenth and Twentieth Century Spanish Literature
    Representative 19th and 20th century Spanish texts, poetry, drama and novel; explorations of the place of the individual within the rhythms of Spain's changing identity. Authors: Jose de Espronceda, Benito Perez Galdos, Federico Garcia Lorca, Angela Figuera Aymerich and Graciela Baquero.   • CAS LS 455: Spanish American Literature Through the Nineteenth Century
    A close reading of representative texts of Spanish American literature from early writings of discovery and conquest through the nineteenth century. Emphasis on the development of the modern novel and on Spanish America's quest for a cultural identity.
  • CAS LS 456: Spanish Medieval and Golden Age Literature
    A linguistic approach to medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque writers. Dynamic interaction between literature and the development of the Spanish language. Focus on crucial moments in Spain's cultural and linguistic history.
  • CAS LS 457: Twentieth Century Spanish American Literature
    Representative literary works written in Spanish America during the twentieth century. Special attention to the relationship between modernity and identity, and the connection of literature with other cultural expressions, particularly film.
