    Introduction to the major works of ancient and medieval literatures that influenced later Continental, English, and American literature: the Bible, Homeric epic, Greek tragedy, Vergil's Aeneid, and Dante's The Divine Comedy.   • CAS EN 327: Topics in American Literature
    Topics vary. Topic for Fall 2018: Jane Eyre's Sisters. A close study of Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre is followed by a look at 19th and 20th century writers who appropriate and revise aspects of Bronte's novel in an American context. Authors include Jacobs, Alcott, Stoddard, Rhys and Mukherjee. This course fulfills a single unit in the following BU Hub area: Aesthetic Exploration. Topic for Spring 2019: Transnationalism and American Literature. Challenging nationalist assumptions, this course traces the development of U.S. literature by exploring the formative impact of the immigrant experience; the middle passage; expatriation; black internationalism; translation; and transpacific exchange. Readings by Crevecoeur, James, Cather, Stein, Hughes, Wright, and others.

    After covering the origin of the universe, earth and life, the course examines two topics: natural hazards, including earthquakes and volcanoes; and human impacts on Earth, including climate change, ozone depletion, pollution, and increasing demands on mineral and energy resources.   • CAS ES 107: Introduction to Climate and Earth System Science
    Introduction to the Earth as an integrated system composed of interacting biosphere, hydrosphere, cryosphere, lithosphere, and atmosphere subsystems. Major themes include earth system stability, instability and capacity for change on all time scales, including human-induced climate change.   • CAS ES 142: Introduction to Beach and Shoreline Processes
    Coastal processes including tidal currents, wave action, longshore transport, and estuarine circulation; barrier island and spit formation; study of beaches, dunes, and marshes; effects of tectonics, glaciers, and rivers on beaches and coastal morphology.   • CAS ES 144: Introduction to Oceanography
    Examines the physical, geological, chemical, and biological processes that govern that oceans with a focus on how the ocean is impacted by and also moderates the pace of global change. Dynamic nature of the oceans on both a short- and a long-term scale is emphasized. Carries natural science divisional credit (without lab) in CAS.   • CAS ES 300: Earth's Rocky Materials
    Utilizing an Earth Systems approach, this course begins with the mineral phases of the core and mantle. Crustal mineralogy and petrology follow, examining how minerals and the rocks that contain them are produced by magmatic, metamorphic, hypothermal, and surface processes.     Examines the social, environmental, and technological aspects of renewable and nonrenewable energy systems, their historical evolution and implications for the future.     Explores how the United States, at first only a series of borderland outposts, became a sprawling national republic. Investigates factors that brought Americans together and those that tore them apart, as they struggled passionately over racial, religious, and sectional values.     Examines the religious encounters, economic rivalries, and military battles produced by European imperialism in Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia since 1500.
