  • CFA TH 671: Theatrical Welding 1
    Prereq: Instructor Consent; Meets with CFA TH 271. An introduction to welding technology explaining and outlining welding safety and the best welding practices for theatre. Course covers cutting, drilling and assembling mild steel for theatrical scenic construction. 2.0 credits. Fall semester.
  • CFA TH 672: Theatrical Welding 2
    Prereq: CFA TH 671; A continuation of CFA TH 671. Meets with CFA TH 272. Advanced techniques in welding technology explaining and outlining welding safety and the best welding practices for theatre.   • CFA TH 675: Costume Design Studio 1
    Prereq: Instructor Consent; Fundamentals of costume design. Exercises focus on analysis-designing from the inside out. Covers a range of visual, written, and verbal techniques of communication; script analysis, style, research techniques, and rendering skills. Readings and projects may incorporate all theatre genres. 3.0 credits. Fall semester.
  • CFA TH 676: Costume Design Studio 2
    Prereq: CFA TH 675; A continuation of CFA TH 675. Fundamentals of costume design. Exercises focus on analysis-designing from the inside out. Covers a range of visual, written, and verbal techniques of communication; script analysis, style, research techniques, and rendering skills. Readings and projects may incorporate all theatre genres. 3.0 credits. Spring semester.
  • CFA TH 677: Figure Drawing 1
    Prereq: Graduate standing or consent of instructor; Meets with CFA TH 177. Studio work in figure drawing. Emphasis on drawing techniques and media through observation. May be repeated for credit. 1.0 credit. Fall semester.

  • CFA TH 679: Costume Production Studio 1
    Prereq: Graduate standing or consent of instructor; An in depth study of pattern making for the female silhouette. Draping and flat patterning techniques are augmented with historical research in pattern development. The student develops a thorough understanding of the form and function of each element of the female costume. 3.0 credits. Fall semester.
  • CFA TH 680: Costume Production Studio 2
    Prereq: Graduate standing or consent of instructor; An in depth study of pattern making for the female silhouette. Draping and flat patterning techniques are augmented with historical research in pattern development. The student develops a thorough understanding of the form and function of each element of the female costume. 3.0 credits. Spring semester.
  • CFA TH 682: Intro to Textiles 2
    Prereq: CFA TH 681; A continuation of CFA TH 681. Meets with CFA TH 282. The course will cover identification and use of a variety of different fabrics including theatrical goods. It will include a brief history of textiles in conjunction with a focused overview of patterns, colors and fibers that developed and were used over a period of time as a result of growth within the industry. Scheduled trips to the Textile Museum in Lowell and the Museum of Fine Arts will support and enhance the student's experience with the subject. 1.0 credit. Spring semester. Offered every other odd numbered AY.
  • CFA TH 683: Lighting Design Studio 1
    Prereq: Graduate standing or consent of instructor; Introduction to the art and craft of lighting design for the stage. Explores the lighting design process, how to develop lighting ideas, concepts, and visual images from a text, and how to support those ideas to the point of realization. Required Labs will supplement class work with hands-on activities. 3.0 credits. Fall semester.

Focus is especially strong in aspects of: history of artists and images, history of technology, photographic processes and basics of the camera and technology. 1.0 credits. Fall semester.

    Prereq: Graduate standing or consent of instructor; Meets with CFA TH 287. An overview of theatrical sound design, focusing on the process of creating a design. The emphasis is on sound cue creation, establishing mood, emotion and environment with sound, and critical listening. Covers the basics of the tools and technology used to implement a professional sound design. 3.0 credits. Fall semester.

    Prereq: CFA TH 687; A continuation of CFA TH 687. Meets with CFA TH 288. An overview of theatrical sound design, focusing on the process of creating a design.     Prereq: Graduate standing or consent of instructor; Meets with CFA TH 289 . Audio systems, video systems and intercom systems will be examined from input to output in terms of signal flow and interconnection practices and how they are used. 3.0 credits. Fall semester.

  • CFA TH 695: Production Management Studio 1
    Prereq: Graduate standing or consent of instructor; Roles and responsibilities of Production Managing on a professional level, including scheduling, staffing, budgeting, relationships and time management. Students will get hands-on experience in each of these through the creation of a theoretical theatre company. 3.0 credits. Fall semester.
  • CFA TH 696: Production Management Studio 2

    Prereq: Graduate standing; Each semester that a 1st year graduate student in Design & Production is in residence at SOT, he/she is required to enroll in an appropriate section of Production. Meets late afternoons, evenings and/or weekends. Specific design and shop work in the mounting of student or professional productions. Does not include off-crew design work. Fall semester.
