CFA ME 741: Foundations of Music Education I: Philosophy and History
The purpose of this course is to examine and discuss historical and contemporary philosophical ideas and problems in music and music education. A goal is for students to develop a sharpened sensitivity to past and present thought (primarily, but not limited to historical and philosophical thought) in the field of music education in order to better inform their own curricular and instructional choices. -
CFA ME 759: Curriculum in Music Education: Vision and Design
This is the final course in the Master of Music in Music Education degree program, and it lasts for 14 weeks. In the course, students focus on the development of a site-specific music curriculum, including the philosophical, psychological, and sociological foundations for that curriculum as well as the prospective implementation and assessment of the project. Because the nature of the project is to bring together elements from all previous coursework, it is graded as the Comprehensive Examination for the degree program. -
CFA ME 799: Curriculum Organization in Music Education
Philosophies and objectives of music in public education; scope and sequence of curriculum appropriate for general choral and instrumental instruction. 4.0 credits. -
CFA ME 841: Quantitative Research Methods
Quantitative research methods and their application to educational research contexts; quantitative research design, sampling techniques, reliability and validity, descriptive and inferential statistics, quantitative studies in music education, and using software to conduct statistical analysis. -
CFA ME 859: Critique in Music Education
This course normally serves as the final course in the DMA sequence. It brings theoretical and conceptual understandings from prior courses together with a range of research strategies, so that students can consider a possible research path. -
CFA ME 899: Independent Project/Directed Study
Specialized, individually tailored and guided work on projects not connected with a thesis, dissertation or other terminal document, but of particular interest to the graduate student. Variable credit. -
CFA ME 921: Research and Directed Study in Music Education
All other courses must be completed prior to enrollment in ME921. A week-long residency on campus with faculty where students define a need for research, develop a research problem, think critically about theoretical frameworks, and discuss appropriate research strategies. -
CFA ME 990: CONTINUING STDY
This is a continuing studies course designed for graduate students who have not yet had their thesis or dissertation proposals approved. [0 cr] -
CFA ME 995: DMA DISSRTATION
This course is for DMA students who have passed their qualifying examinations, have had their dissertation proposals approved and are in the first semester of dissertation work. In subsequent semesters, students should register for ME996. [3 cr] -
CFA ME 996: DMA DISS CONT
Ongoing work toward completion of the DMA terminal project; dissertation, doctoral composition or comparable approved project. This is for students who ahve completed their first semester of dissertation work and are continuing to work toward completion of the degree. Students must register for ME996 in every semester through graduation. [0 cr] -
CFA MH 106: Music and Culture
Survey of music's dynamic interface with culture and society, past and present, including music's relationship to politics, race, religion, and identity. No preq. Open to all students. 2 cr. -

CFA MH 232: Jazz Music
A study of important issues connected with America's original music: the art of improvisation; the role of composition; innovation and tradition; individuality and style; instruments and forms. We also consider controversial questions such as the formation of the roots of jazz, issues of race, and the "neo-classicism" of the 1980s and 1990s. Students will learn how to listen, to appreciate jazz if they are unfamiliar with it, and to deepen their understanding if they already enjoy it. 2 or 4 cr. (*) -
CFA MH 325: Romantic Music
Prereq: CFA MH 201/211 and 202/212. Special topics in music from ca. 1820-1900, dealing mainly with orchestral, chamber and piano music, as well as Lieder, opera, program music, and individual or groups of composers, 3 cr. -
CFA MH 327: Selected Topics in Music History
Prereq: CFA MH 201/211 and 202/212. Special topics in the history of music, covering a variety of approaches, styles, and periods, from Antiquity through the present. 3 cr. -
CFA MH 331: Topics in World Music
No prereq; open to all students. Selected topics concerning non-western music and culture, including colonialism and post-colonialism, orientalism, anthropological perspectives, modernization, transmission, migration, diaspora, and the influence of technology. 3 cr. -
CFA MH 333: Popular Music & Culture
No prereq; open to all students. Selected topics exploring the relationship between popular music and culture, from American popular song and musical theatre, to worldbeat, blues, R&B, rock, Hip-hop, and techno. 3 cr.
