• CAS LF 112: Second-Semester French
  Continues CAS LF 111. A multimedia approach which develops speaking, reading, writing, and listening skills, together with the grammar and vocabulary needed for more complex communicative tasks.
• CAS LF 113: Intensive Beginning French
  Intensive French course for beginners or according to placement test results. Introduction to grammar, vocabulary, and structure of French, emphasizing the basic communication skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. (If CAS LF 111, 112, 123, 131, 132, or a more advanced college-level course has been completed, this course cannot be taken for credit.)
• CAS LF 211: Third-Semester French
  Authentic literary selections by writers from diverse Francophone countries, cultural readings, and discussion of short-subject films by francophone filmmakers, accompanied by advanced study of grammar and emphasis on communicative skills.
• CAS LF 212: Fourth-Semester French
  Refines the four skills through in-depth study of a modern novel. Creative oral and written exercises based on the novel and study of advanced grammar. Viewing of contemporary French films. Fulfills CAS language requirement, prepares for further study (LF 303).
• CAS LF 303: French Composition and Conversation I
  Topics based courses exploring various aspects of French and Francophone literature, culture, and society. In the context of each section's unique theme, students advance proficiency in speaking, writing, reading, and listening. Four topics are offered in Fall 2016. Sections A1 and B1: Crime. Analysis of the formulas of crime fiction through novels, short stories, series, and movies. Contemporary debates on topics related to criminality, such as marginalization, poverty, violence, ethics, and justice. Section C1: French in the World. Analysis of images, short stories, excerpts from novels, and films that address the relationship between France and several of its former colonies, notably in West Africa, from colonial times to the present. Section D1: Secrets, Lies and Family Ties. Exploration, through modern films and literary texts, of how people lie and how this behavior contributes to various modes of communication originating in families, extending to other relationships. Other topics include emerging identities; societal pressures; gender fluidity. Section E1: French Through Film and Media. Exploration of French and Francophone media from film to television and broadcast press, as a conduit for enhancing students' understanding of French and Francophone culture.
• CAS LF 304: Composition and Conversation II
  Develops increased fluency and a more nuanced use of spoken and written French through discussion of contemporary fiction and film. Reading of articles from the press to explore current and historical issues in French society.
• CAS LF 306: Advanced Oral Expression
  Advanced training in rapid and idiomatic French speech. Oral reports. Role playing; vocabulary building; targeted work on pronunciation, intonation, and aural comprehension. Lab required.

• CAS LI 111: First-Semester Italian
  For beginners only, or placement examination results. Grammar, conversation practice, written exercises, and compositions. Conducted in Italian. Lab required. Four hours weekly. (If CAS LI 131 or a more advanced college-level course has been completed, this course cannot be taken for credit.)
• CAS LI 112: Second-Semester Italian
  Continues the CAS LI 111 basic text: grammar, conversation, compositions. Conducted in Italian. Lab required. Four hours weekly.
• CAS LI 211: Third-Semester Italian
  Intended for students with a satisfactory background in elementary Italian, who require some review of basic structures, verbs, and related essentials. Review, emphasis on composition skills, and conversation. Reading and discussion of short stories, poetry, and plays. Conducted in Italian.
• CAS LI 212: Fourth-Semester Italian
  For students who wish to build active use of Italian in speaking, writing, and reading. Continuation of CAS LI 211: review, development of reading skills through analysis of contemporary texts, compositions, conversation. Lab required. Satisfactory completion of CAS LI 212 fulfills the CAS language requirement.
• CAS LI 303: Self-Expression in Italian
  Building and expansion of vocabulary through development of fluent discussion in Italian on topics of current interest. Emphasis on idiomatic expressions. Individual oral reports related to Italian culture, history, cinema, and literature. Reading of a novel. Not open to native speakers of Italian.
• CAS LI 459: Primo Levi Within Holocaust Literature
  A study of Primo Levi's writings and scientific, theological, and philosophical approaches to the Holocaust. Other theorists (Arendt, Wiesel, Müller-Hill) and other survivors' testimonies (Delbo, Borowski, Fink) are read in conjunction with Levi's works. Also offered as CAS RN 459 and CAS XL 459.
• CAS LP 211: Third-Semester Portuguese
  Promotes cross-cultural understanding of the Luso-African-Brazilian cultures through authentic literary texts, multimedia, film and music. Completes study of grammatical structures and syntactical patterns. Emphasizes reading, writing and conversational competency. Conducted in Portuguese.
• CAS LP 212: Fourth-Semester Portuguese
  Review of the grammar and syntax of Portuguese. Further develops reading, writing, and conversational competency while expanding students' knowledge of history and culture. Conducted in Portuguese. Fulfills the CAS language requirement.
• CAS LS 111: First-Semester Spanish
  For students who have never studied Spanish, or by placement test results. Introduction to grammatical structures. Emphasis on aural comprehension, speaking, and pronunciation. Introduction to Hispanic culture. Lab required.
• CAS LS 112: Second-Semester Spanish
  Completes study of basic grammatical structures. Emphasis on speaking and aural comprehension. Readings on contemporary Hispanic culture. Writing assignments. Lab required.
• CAS LS 211: Third-Semester Spanish
  Completes study of grammatical structures of Spanish. Use of spoken language in conversation. Reading in Hispanic civilization and of contemporary short stories. Writing exercises involving more complex grammatical and syntactical patterns.
• CAS LS 212: Fourth-Semester Spanish
  Review of the structures of Spanish. Intensive practice of spoken language. More advanced readings from Hispanic culture. Frequent compositions. Satisfactory completion of CAS LS 212 fulfills the CAS language requirement.
