Not open to students for whom Spanish is a first language. No more than two 300-level Spanish language courses (LS 306, LS 307, LS 308, LS 310, LS 311) may be taken for credit. Advanced study of the Spanish language through the analysis of literature in its relations to the arts: music, painting, dance, performance. Four topics are offered Fall 2015. Section A1 and A2: Women's Voices: Female characters in Hispanic Literature and Film. Advanced study of Spanish through the analysis of selected female characters, from the Middle Ages to the present day. Section B1: 'Alma Boricua.' Study of the Puerto Rican experience through literature, film, music, and dance, from colonial times to the present. Section C1: Short Stories from the Hispanic World. The short story as a vehicle of Hispanic culture. Elements and language of story-telling. Section D1: Sailing with Darwin to Patagonia and Beyond. Explores Charles Darwin's discoveries during his voyage to South America in 1831. Using Darwin's diary to map out his route, the focus is on original works in Spanish written by naturalists, scientists, as well as authors of fiction.
