Certificate in Mobile Strategies

This is a non-credit program covering mobile technologies and applications. The workshop lasts three days; pre-work and post-work is required.

Prerequisite

Students must have at least one year of experience in programming higher-level languages such as Java, C#, or Python, or a programming course equivalent to MET CS 341 Data Structures with C++ or MET CS 342 Data Structures with Java.

Program Format

Pre-Workshop

Students will complete reading assignments and three-page essays on their existing understanding of (1) the categories of mobile applications, (2) mobile platforms, and (3) types of mobile applications that are likely to emerge in the next decade.

Workshop

Day 1

Mobile capabilities, application categories, and platforms. Students submit and discuss notes on how the content they have learned differs from their preconceptions.

Day 2

Tools for generating mobile applications for Android smartphones, tablets, iPhones, and iPads. Students submit and discuss differences and similarities among the systems studied.

Day 3

Morning: Selected Android details

Afternoon: Mobile strategy pitfalls and promise. Students submit notes regarding how their views on this topic have changed during the program.

Post-Workshop

Students will complete a post-classroom assignment that incorporates the strategies and techniques learned in the workshop and applies to a predetermined project to be submitted within a predetermined number of days. This will include three 4-page essays.
