Seminar: Topics in Hispanic Literature

Two topics are offered Fall 2013. Students may take one or both for credit. Section A1: Fortunata y Jacinta ante la critica. Benito Pérez Galdós's 1886/7 novel, Fortunata y Jacinta, one of the masterpieces of the European novel, has proven to be a laboratory for contemporary critical perspectives. Class commentary on the text and representative critical studies of the work. Section B1: El Barroco de Indias.A much discussed seventeenth-century literary and artistic historical moment is studied mainly as a Spanish-American cultural expression that responds to a nascent "criollo" ideology in its conflictive dialogue with the Spanish Peninsular Baroque.
