College of Engineering
The College of Engineering is an academic community of students, faculty, and staff involved in educating the engineers of tomorrow and advancing the frontiers of science and technology through research and discovery. By viewing the engineering profession as a service to humanity, the College helps students become responsible, effective members of society.
The Mission of the College of Engineering is:
- to provide a rigorous education to prepare students to become highly qualified engineers and the technology leaders of tomorrow,
- to prepare graduates to lead fulfilling professional lives, participate in lifelong learning, and assume roles as contributing members of society, and
- to expand and advance the frontiers of science and technology through research, discovery, and innovation.
Organization of the College and Degrees Offered
The College of Engineering includes the Departments of Biomedical Engineering, Electrical & Computer Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering, and the Divisions of Materials Science & Engineering and Systems Engineering. The College offers a variety of programs leading to the Bachelor of Science (BS) in Biomedical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering. The College also offers optional concentrations in Energy Technologies, Nanotechnology, Technology Innovation, Aerospace Engineering, and Manufacturing Engineering. The College of Engineering offers minors in biomedical engineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering, materials science and engineering, mechanical engineering, and systems engineering.
The College of Engineering also offers Master of Science (MS) degrees in Biomedical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Global Manufacturing Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Photonics, and Systems Engineering; Master of Engineering (MEng) degrees in Biomedical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Photonics, and Systems Engineering; and the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Biomedical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Systems Engineering.
Through the MMEDIC program, students can earn a BS degree from the College of Engineering and an MD degree from Boston University School of Medicine. A combined Master of Science in Manufacturing Engineering and Master of Business Administration (MS/MBA) is offered jointly with the School of Management; and a combined Doctor of Philosophy in Biomedical Engineering and Doctor of Medicine (MD/PhD) is offered jointly with the School of Medicine.
The College also provides a pathway to a master’s degree in engineering for students who do not have an undergraduate engineering degree. The Late Entry Accelerated Program (LEAP) allows students with at least a bachelor’s degree in the liberal arts or other non-engineering fields to enter any of the College’s graduate programs and ultimately earn a Master of Science, Master of Engineering, or PhD in engineering.
Accreditation
The BS programs in biomedical engineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering, and mechanical engineering are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.
