• CAS LS 452: Topics in Latin America Literature and Culture
  Two topics are offered 2013/2014. Students may take one or both for credit. Topic for Fall 2013: The Latino and Latin American Experience. How have the Americas been redefined by immigration? What roles did political persecution and mass extermination play in shaping the literary and cultural scene? What are the effects triggered by translation? Items considered include readings, music, and film. Topic for Spring 2014: Tango and Urban Culture.
• CAS LS 454: Survey of Nineteenth and Twentieth Century Spanish Literature
  A chronological survey of Spanish literature of the last two centuries, including romanticism, realism, modernism, and contemporary Spanish literature. Readings from Larra, Zorrilla, Bécquer, Rosalía de Castro, Galdós, Unamuno, Lorca, Sastre, Cela, Celaya, de Otero, Rosa Montero.
• CAS LS 455: Spanish American Literature Through the Nineteenth Century
  A close reading of representative texts of Spanish American literature from early writings of discovery and conquest through the nineteenth century. Emphasis on the development of the modern novel and on Spanish America's quest for a cultural identity.
• CAS LS 456: Spanish Medieval and Golden Age Literature
  Major works from the medieval, renaissance and baroque periods. Attention to development of different genres: epic and lyric poetry, drama, and the novel. Issues of Spain's cultural history. Authors include Fernando de Rojas, Cervantes, Góngora, Lope, Quevedo, and Calderón.
• CAS LS 457: Twentieth Century Spanish American Literature
  Representative literary works written in Spanish America during the twentieth century. Special attention to the relationship between modernity and identity, and the connection of literature with other cultural expressions, particularly film.

• CAS LS 504: History of the Spanish Language
  The evolution from Latin to Spanish including developments due to external factors such as foreign invasions, contacts with France, and the conquest of America. Analysis of the historical and cultural contexts in which this evolution occurred.

  Topics vary.
• CAS LS 507: The Sounds of Spanish
  Introduction to Spanish phonetics and phonology. Covers articulatory, acoustic, and auditory phonetics, focusing on techniques for visualizing speech sounds. Examines the phonemic inventory and phonological organization of Spanish from several perspectives, including generative and articulatory phonology as well as sociolinguistics. Also offered as CAS LX 507.
• CAS LS 508: The Structure of Spanish
  Introduction to Spanish morphology and syntax. Explores the structure of Spanish words, phrases, and sentences from multiple perspectives with a focus on natural language data. Examines Generative, Usage- Based, and Lexical-Functional approaches to the analysis of grammatical structure. Also offered as CAS LX 508.
• CAS LS 552: Lorca and His Contemporaries
  The lyric poetry of Federico García Lorca in relation to the aesthetic movements in Spain and in Europe during the first third of the twentieth century.
• CAS LS 554: Jorge Luis Borges
  Hoaxes, plagiarism, rumors, gossip turned into fact, characters and plots emerging from sources as diverse as Cervantes, Poe, Kafka, Emerson, and Macedonio are some of the elements of this kaleidoscopic consideration of the poetry and prose of Jorge Luis Borges. Also offered as CAS XL 470 C1.

• CAS LS 565: The Spanish Picaresque Novel
  Development of the Spanish picaresque in relation to social and historical context. Special attention to its place in the evolution of the modern novel. Close study of Lazarillo de Tormes, Estebanillo González, works by Alemán, Cervantes, Quevedo, López de Ubeda.
• CAS LS 570: Don Quixote
  Close thematic, stylistic, and structural analysis of Cervantes's masterpiece. Attention to its contributions to the development of the modern novel as well as to its place within the literary context of its day.
• CAS LS 572: The Spanish American Colonial Experience: Early Texts, New Interpretations
  Analysis of early texts that contributed to Europe's perception of the American continent and of modern literary works from Spanish America that re-examine the European view. Authors include Columbus, Cabeza de Vaca, Balboa, Carpentier, Posse, and Saer.
• CAS LS 573: Spanish American Literary Modernismo and Modernization
  Study of Spanish American modernismo (1880-1910) in its socioeconomic context. Focus on the ambiguity of an art for art's sake movement that was frequently expressed in popular journalism.

• CAS LS 576: Topics in Spanish American Literature
  Two topics are offered Fall 2012. Students may take one or both for credit. Section A1: Spanish American Short Story. Close reading of works by major short story writers of Spanish America. Emphasis on the concept of modernity and on Spanish-America's preoccupation with cultural identity. Authors, among others, include Darío, Acevedo Díaz, Quiroga, Lugones, Borges, García Márquez, Rulfo, and Ferré. Section B1: The Culture of Exile in Latin America. What happens when Latin American writers work in non- Spanish speaking countries? What are the cultural manifestations of displacement? The course deals with literature, film, and music as they address issues that include bilingualism and translation.
