An introduction to the English background of our legal profession and common law system. Consideration of social, economic, and political forces at work in the development of legal culture and legal doctrines in property, contracts, torts, and criminal law. Readings and small-group projects will include study of primary source materials. LIMITED WRITING OPTION: Some students may, with the permission of the instructor, fulfill the Upperclass Writing Requirement by submitting a paper in lieu of the final examination.
