  In-depth review of analytical methods and terminology for diverse post-tonal musical styles. Analysis of representative works from the post-tonal literature.

  Basic techniques in scoring for chorus, orchestra, band, and ensembles. Ranges and transpositions of voices and instruments; idiomatic writing, score reading, and clef transposition. 3 cr.

• CFA MU 708: Piano Pedagogy
  An historical overview of the main treatises in Piano Pedagogy as well as teaching methods and materials for use in private and group instruction. The first semester deals with literature and musical concepts as they relate to beginning pianists. The second semester covers some of the major repertoire of the common practice period as well as the work of Ortmann and Schultz. 2 cr
• CFA MU 710: Special Topics in Theory and Analysis
  Close study of specifically defined areas in theory and analysis. Individual papers and projects assigned by the instructor. 3 cr.(May be repeated for credit.)
• CFA MU 711: Performance and Analysis
  In-depth review of literature on the relation of analysis to performance; practical application of theoretical and analytic concepts to performance decisions; guided exercises in writing analysis addressing performance issues. 3 cr.

• CFA MU 719: Doctoral Proseminar
  Preparation for doctoral qualifying examination in music theory; may be required by a department prior to student's applying to take qualifying examinations. Students may be required to repeat course without credit. 2 cr.
• CFA MU 724: Seminar in Music of the Classic Era
  Topics may include opera, symphony, chamber music, the Lied, sacred music, individual composers' and national styles, cultural context, reception, notation, analysis, and performance of Classic music. Permission of instructor. 3 credits. May be repeated for credit. (Meets with CFA MU 824.)
• CFA MU 728: Continuo
  Keyboard and other continuo players are given note-by-note analysis and coaching of selected continuo realizations, both written and improvised. Non-keyboard players are given tutelage in basic continuo realization appropriate to their level of keyboard skill, so that they may be able to accompany their future students, and also to better appreciate and have more discernment of the continuo player?'s role in ensembles in which they take part. Additionally, they will play their own instruments (or sing) in the class so that the keyboard players have practice in realizing figured bass accompaniments. For both, a historical overview of the practice of figured bass accompaniment is given together with stylistic analysis and practical musical coaching.
• CFA MU 734: Special Topics in String Literature
  Focused study on a specific body of String Chamber Music Literature (check with String Dept for topic) through score study, readings and lecture, listening to selected recordings, coached group readings by those registered for the course, and/or possible performances in or out of the class meeting time. Open to String Majors. 1 cr.
• CFA MU 749: Research and Bibliography (Music)
  Methods and materials of research in music; bibliography and bibliographical aids; individual treatment in special areas; style in formal writing; leading historians of past and present; introduction to musicology. 3cr.
• CFA MU 750: Special Topics in Performance Practice 1
  Consideration of major performance issues in the music of Monteverdi, Handel, Bach, et al. Covers topics such as ornamentation, tempo, articulation, tuning and temperament, baroque instruments and their playing techniques, baroque dance, and various national styles of playing. Students perform on their instruments, discuss performance issues, read primary sources and other material about 17th and 18th century performance, compose ornamentation, and listen to and discuss recorded performances. occasional guest lecturers. Required of all historical performance majors. Open to other music graduate students with permission of the instructor.
• CFA MU 757: Crossroads: Musical and Cultural Perspectives on the Blues
  Examination of the blues in its musical and cultural dimensions. Focuses on defining the blues as a place where cultures and styles meet. Chord structure, cultural background, characteristics, major themes, different regional styles and dialects, and its place in history will be examined along with the cultural idea of "crossroads.? 4 cr.
• CFA MU 758: Opera Arias for Pianists 1
  Course for collaborative pianists in the study and performance of standard opera aria repertoire. Required for DMA collaborative piano majors with vocal or vocal/instrumental concentration. Open as elective credit by permission of instructor to music majors having requisite piano skills. The course will meet for two hours each week. Topics will include the study of recitative, operas of Mozart, and the Bel Canto operas of Bellini, Rossini, Donizetti and Verdi. Students will be required to purchase a textbook and opera aria for anthologies. 2 credits, Fall semester.
• CFA MU 773: Foundations of Music Education I: Philosophy and History
  Introduction to historical and philosophical foundations of music education. An intensive reading and research seminar course in the history of educational thought and practices in music education in the United States from the Colonial Period to modern times. The course has two distinct disciplinary components; historical research and philosophical discourse in music education.
