From the 18th through the mid-20th centuries a preponderance of training for and performing of religiously related service work around the world took place under the aegis of Christian mission societies. Changes since World War II, however, have radically altered the context within which servant-hearted people might act. Today, a huge proportion of the type of work formerly conducted by missionaries and mission societies comes under the auspices of organizations that are, to some degree or other, independent of the mainline Christian denominations, national governments, and businesses. Students wishing to serve in a globalized context especially need to gain an understanding of the historical and intellectual foundations of faith-based organizations (FBOs) and international non-governmental organizations (INGOs) and to be prepared for everyday problems with which they will be confronted. In addition to enhancing their abilities to analyze the settings within which service efforts take place and the self-understandings workers bring to these contexts, this course is intended to equip participants with some practical skills necessary for effective work within the FBO/INGO arena.
