In 1991-92 and 1993-94, Hugh Baxter served as U.S. Supreme Court law clerk to retired Justice William J. Brennan Jr. and to Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg; he also was affiliated with the chambers of Justice Harry A. Blackmun. Since arriving at Boston University in 1992, he has taught first-year courses in constitutional law, torts and legal philosophy, as well as upper-level courses or seminars in legal philosophy, election law and Supreme Court decision-making. In 2002, Baxter was appointed also to Boston University’s Philosophy Department. In Spring 2003, Baxter received Boston University’s Michael Melton Award for Teaching Excellence. He served as Associate Dean for Administration between 2003 and 2005, and in 2011, his book Habermas: The Discourse Theory of Law and Democracy was published by Stanford University Press.
