This course reviews a range of psychodynamic theories relevant for working with adults including disruptions in attachment, self psychology and ego psychology. Attention is paid to addressing transference in a therapeutic manner and using countertransference as a window into understanding the client’s problems in relationships and general functioning. Longer-term treatment is explored using case vignettes from the field and the instructor. The impact of substances, trauma, family life, and social forces on adult "personality style" are elaborated, as well as the effects of oppression on adaptations under stress.
