• CAS LS 504: History of the Spanish Language
  Study of the structure of sounds, general concepts of language change, and specific phonological, morphological, and syntactic changes in the history of Spanish. Begins with the modern language and proceeds to successively earlier stages; includes reading of representative medieval and dialectal texts.
• CAS LS 552: Lorca and His Contemporaries
  The lyric and dramatic poetry of Federico García Lorca in relation to aesthetic movements of his day and to the work of companions like the composer Falla, the painter Dalí, and the film director Luis Buñuel.
• CAS LS 554: Jorge Luis Borges
  Close readings of essays, stories, and poems from Borges' complete works. Special attention is given to his sense of humor as it serves to define notions of literature, time, and the uncanny.
• CAS LS 557: Poetry of the Spanish Golden Age
  The development of lyric poetry during the Renaissance and the baroque period. Emphasis on close thematic, stylistic, and structural analysis of individual poems by major figures including Garcilaso, Fray Luis, San Juan de la Cruz, Góngora, and Quevedo.
• CAS LS 559: The Spanish Civil War in Literature
  The Civil War as seen in French, British, American, and Spanish writings. Historical background. Consideration of the historical novel as genre, role of the engagé writer, and literature and ideology.
• CAS LS 561: The Generation of 1898
  Readings of major works from the group of writers including Ramon del Valle-Inclán, Miguel de Unamuno, Pío Baroja, "Azorín," and Antonio Machado. Consideration of their relation to European Modernism.
• CAS LS 564: Spanish Realism
  The novels of Fernán Caballero, Valera, Pardo-Bazán, "Clarín," Galdós, and others. Theoretical and practical perspectives on "Realism" as an aesthetic and a literary form. Relationship of Spanish currents to other currents of European Realism in the nineteenth century.
• CAS LS 565: The Spanish Picaresque Novel
  Development of the Spanish picaresque in relation to social and historical context. Special attention to its place in the evolution of the modern novel. Close study of Lazarillo de Tormes, Estebanillo González, works by Alemán, Cervantes, Quevedo, López de Ubeda.
• CAS LS 566: Spanish Romanticism
  Origins and evolution of the Spanish Romantic movement and its relation to European Romanticism. Readings in theatre, poetry, and prose include Rivas, Espronceda, García Gutiérrez, Hartzenbusch, Zorilla, Larra, Bécquer, and others.
• CAS LS 567: Spanish Poetry of the Middle Ages
  Origins and development of the epic, "cuaderna via," and popular and learned lyric poetry during the Middle Ages. Close reading of representative texts and authors, including Poema del mio Cid, Berceo, Libro de buen amor, and Jorge Manrique.
• CAS LS 568: Prose Fiction of the Spanish Middle Ages
  Development of prose fiction in the Middle Ages, from the short story to the novel. Close reading of major works: Don Juan Manuel's El Conde Lucanor; Diego de San Pedro's Cárcel de amor; and Fernando de Rojas's La Celestina.
• CAS LS 569: Nineteenth-Century Spanish-American Literature
  Major works from the Romantic and Realist/Naturalist periods. Emphasis on Spanish America's quest for cultural independence; relationships with European artistic and literary trends. Authors include Issacs, Palma, Hernández, Blest Gana, Cambaceres, Altamirano, and Martí.
• CAS LS 570: Don Quixote
  Close thematic, stylistic, and structural analysis of Cervantes's masterpiece. Attention to its contributions to the development of the modern novel as well as to its place within the literary context of its day.
• CAS LS 572: The Spanish-American Colonial Experience: Early Texts, New Interpretations
  Analysis of early texts that contributed to Europe's perception of the American continent and of modern literary works from Spanish America that re-examine the European view. Authors include Columbus, Cabeza de Vaca, Balboa, Carpentier, Posse, and Saer.
• CAS LS 573: Spanish-American Literary Modernismo and Modernization
  Study of Spanish-American modernismo (1880-1910) in its socioeconomic context. Focus on the ambiguity of an art for art's sake movement that was frequently expressed in popular journalism.
• CAS LS 574: Literature and Politics in Post-Franco Spain (1975-2000)
  The interaction between political and literary developments in democratic Spain. The responses to a new context in which modernity and post-modernity enter into a dialogue situated at the core of the new national project.
• CAS LS 575: Topics in Peninsular Literature
  Two topics are offered 2008/2009. Students may take one or both for credit. Topic for Fall 2008: Readings from the two verse forms most characteristic of the cultured and popular poetry of Spain, from Garcilaso de la Vega and the romancero to Gerardo Diego and Lorca. Other poets include Góngora, Quevedo, Lope de Vega, and Antonio Machado. Topic for Spring 2009: Recent Trends in Spanish Poetry.
• CAS LS 576: Topics in Spanish-American Literature
  Two topics are offered 2010/2011. Students may take one or both for credit. Topic for Fall 2010: The Spanish American Short Story. Emphasis on the concept of modernity and on Spanish-American preoccupation with cultural identity. Authors include Darío, Acevedo, Díaz, Quiroga, Lugones, Borges, García Márquez, Rulfo, and Ferré. Topic for Spring 2011: TBA.
