  • CAS AR 513: Studies in African Archaeology
    Topics vary. Intensive coverage of particular periods or sub-areas in Africa as selected by the instructor.
  • CAS AR 515: Micromorphology of Terrestrial Sediments
    The micromorphological examination and interpretation of soils, sediments, and archaeological and anthropogenic materials features (e.g., ceramics, bricks, hearths), with focus on the processes of landscape evolution and the mechanisms of archaeological site formation.
  • CAS AR 528: Studies in Mesoamerican Art and Architecture
    Studies of ancient Mesoamerican cultures as known from archaeological sites and from their reconstructed histories evident in changing urban plans, architecture, art, and iconography. Topic varies.
  • CAS AR 530: Studies in Greek Archaeology
    Intensive coverage of particular periods, sub-areas, or topics in Greek archaeology. Possible focuses include monuments and topography, cities and sanctuaries, Iron Age Greece, and archaeology of Roman Greece.
  • CAS AR 531: Studies in Etruscan and Roman Archaeology
    Intensive coverage of particular periods or sub-areas in Etruscan and Roman archaeology. Possible focuses include Etruscan settlements and Roman towns, archaeology of the Roman Republic, and archaeology of the Roman provinces.
  • CAS AR 532: Studies in Archaeology of the Near and Middle East
    Topics vary. Recent topics have included trade in the Near East, Near Eastern cities of the Bronze and Iron Ages, and Near East prehistory.
  • CAS AR 551: Studies in Mesoamerican Archaeology
    Analysis of major events and processes of the Mesoamerican area. Topics include rise of towns, temples, and urbanism; the origin of state; and the development of empires. Taught in Belize.
  • CAS AR 555: Ancient American Writing Systems
    Study of the various writing systems and interdependent Mesoamerican calendar, as found in many media among the Pre-Columbian Olmec, Teotihuacan, Zapotec, Mixtec, Aztec, and Maya cultures, from the last centuries B.C. to the sixteenth century.
  • CAS AR 556: Archaeological Field Research Experience
    Supervised original research in excavation, survey, or field laboratory situation, as part of field study program. Taught in Belize.
  • CAS AR 560: Civilizations of Central and South Asia
    Emergence, development, and decline of two Bronze Age Civilizations called "Oasis" in Central Asia and Indus/Harappan in South Asia. Focus on comparative study of cultural processes of urbanization, complex social, economic and religious institutions, specialized crafts, and long distance trade.
  • CAS AR 570: Studies in Historical Archaeology
    Topics vary. Intensive coverage of particular aspects of historical archaeology as selected by instructor. (Course fulfills department area or technical requirement.)
  • CAS AR 572: Studies in Industrial Archaeology
    The study of the remains of our industrial heritage including above-ground excavations. Topics include mills, dams, canals, bridges, and other material remains of America's industrial development. Field trips to New England industrial sites.
  • CAS AR 576: Collections: Ancient and Historical in Modern Context
    Considers ancient and historical objects in collections from historical, functional, material, and aesthetic perspectives in order to understand original cultural context. Case studies demonstrate changing theory and practice, as well as legal and ethical implications, of museum acquisition and display.
  • CAS AS 100: Cosmic Controversies
    From surprise over the need to invoke Dark Matter and Dark Energy, to confusion about Pluto's being reclassified as a non-planet, this course explores how scientists explain our place in the physical universe, by focusing on some of the most current issues in modern astronomy. Topics range from the solar system, to extraterrestrial life, to the fabric of the entire universe.
  • CAS AS 101: The Solar System
    The historical development of astronomy and the motion of the planets. The formation of the solar system. The sun and its effects on the earth. Description of the planets and the moons of our solar system including recent results from the space program. Use of the observatory.
  • CAS AS 102: The Astronomical Universe
    The birth and death of stars. Red giants, white dwarfs, black holes. Our galaxy, the Milky Way, and other galaxies. The Big Bang and other cosmological theories of our expanding universe. Use of the observatory.
  • CAS AS 109: Cosmology
    The evolution of cosmological thought from prehistory to the present: Greek astronomy, Copernicus, Galileo, Newton, and Einstein. Motion, gravity, and the nature of space-time. The expanding universe. The early universe and Big Bang.
  • CAS AS 117: Cosmic Evolution
    Physical and chemical evolution of the universe from its origin to the present, from simple to complex. Stellar evolution. Planetary formation and evolution. Origin of life. The rise of civilization and technology. The future of humankind. Search for extraterrestrial life.
  • CAS AS 202: Principles of Astronomy I
    Astronomical measurements; time and the celestial sphere; telescopes and observatories; the solar system, orbital motion; comparative planetology; the sun and solar-terrestrial effects; electromagnetic radiation; spectroscopy, stellar properties and stellar evolution; the Milky Way galaxy; galaxies; the universe. Lectures and laboratories. Intended primarily for astronomy or physics concentrators.
  • CAS AS 203: Principles of Astronomy II
    Astronomical measurements; time and the celestial sphere; telescopes and observatories; the solar system, orbital motion; comparative planetology; the sun and solar-terrestrial effects; electromagnetic radiation; spectroscopy, stellar properties and stellar evolution; the Milky Way galaxy; galaxies; the universe. Lectures and laboratories. Intended primarily for astronomy or physics concentrators.
