“Children's Health in Sub-Saharan Africa: Insights from Evolutionary Medicine and Bio-cultural Anthropology”
The perspectives of evolutionary medicine and, more broadly, bio-cultural anthropology, can provide insight into a wide variety of topics of global health concern. Examples of such insight from research conducted in diverse sub-Saharan African settings include investigation of immune system developmental adaptability, evaluation of the role of iron deficiency as a nutritional adaptation to infectious disease, and the application of a game theoretic model to decision-making surrounding female genital cutting.
Katherine Wander received an MPH from the Department of Epidemiology and a PhD from the Department of Anthropology at the University of Washington. Her current research evaluates the roles of infectious disease morbidity and nutrition in immune system development among children in Kilimanjaro, Tanzania. In addition, she pursues research into family decision-making dynamics and female genital cutting in the Senegambia.
