"Afghan Star" Film Screening and Discussion

The BU Women's Resource Center and the Health & Human Rights Caucus is sponsoring a screening of “Afghan Star,” a fictional movie that follows four contestants in the final episodes of an Afghani version of “American Idol.” Afterwards, there will be a panel discussion of the gender and human rights issues highlighted by the film. Panelists include Shahla Haeri, College of Arts & Sciences, Director of Women's Studies and Professor of Anthropology; and Nick Mills, College of Communication, Department of Journalism. After 30 years of war and Taliban rule, 'Pop Idol' has come to Afghanistan, and people are risking all to sing. A thought provoking documentary on emerging democracy and the role of independent media in driving social activism in Afghanistan. The documentary won both the director and audience awards at the Sundance Film Festival in 2008.
