Alexander Rankin , Gotlieb Center's Assistant Director for Acquisitions, describes a "Strictly Private" letter from Abraham Lincoln to Vice President Hannibal Hamlin, dated September 28, 1862. In the letter, the president expressed his deep anxiety over the lack of support his Emancipation Proclamation initially garnered.
