The American Civil War
as seen through the collections of the
Howard Gotlieb Archival Research Center
Alexander Rankin , Gotlieb Center's Assistant Director for Acquisitions, discusses the history of the Volk Life Mask and Hand Molds of Abraham Lincoln on display in the exhibition. Volk, the cousin to Stephen A. Douglas, met the future President at the great Lincoln-Douglas debates of 1858. Lincoln agreed to sit for a mask, but suffered no small discomfort as the glues and resins hardened quickly, losing Lincoln some hair and whiskers as the mold came off his face. ©2013 Trustees of Boston University Video by Anthony Cromwell Hill |
