English for Health and Medical Professionals is designed to help you develop the English language skills essential to succeed in the health and medical field and prepare for study, work or research in a U.S. health or medical program.
Language and Communication Focus
Develop critical English language skills such as technical, anatomical and pharmaceutical vocabulary. Learn expressions for both professional and social interactions.
Health and Medical Concepts
Learn about health and medical concepts, current issues and vocabulary through case studies, textbooks, the Internet, radio, and medical and scientific articles from publications such as the New York Times, Discover and Scientific American.
Academic and Professional Preparation
Learn to take notes, identify critical material, and explain your points in clear and accurate English, in speech and in writing. Develop insight into the U.S. university system and American professors' expectations of students and colleagues.
Tours and Visiting Lecturers
Make site visits to local organizations, facilities, and clinics such as Boston University’s Medical School, School of Public Health, and BioSquare Laboratory.
Writing Workshop
Improve your writing skills by drafting descriptions of mechanisms and processes, definitions and classifications, as well as by working on grammar and clarity of expression.
When you study English for Health and Medical Professionals at CELOP, you will improve your English as well as your ability to interact with colleagues and patients.
- Class activities will help you develop vital communication skills such as giving effective presentations on medical topics, learning about employer/employee and doctor/patient relationships, understanding nonverbal communication, and idiomatic English, and correct pronunciation and intonation.
- Each week of the program will focus on a different health and medical topic, which will be determined by the needs and interests of program participants. Possible topics may include: medical terminology in practitioners’ areas of specialization, diseases and treatments, genomics and biotechnology, and world health issues.
Entrance Requirements
This program is open to individuals with an advanced level of English, plus at least two years academic or professional experience in a health or medical field. In addition to the usual application materials, please send a copy of your CV or resume and a brief statement of purpose (300 to 500 words) describing your professional experience and what you hope to get out of this course.
