Special Interest | English for Science & Technology

Who should choose this concentration?
Those at the high-intermediate level or above who want to focus on English for science and technology, either for academic or professional purposes, for example, those interested in dentistry, medicine, computer science, or engineering.

What will I learn?
As with all CELOP core classes, English for Science & Technology will help you develop the skills, fluency and confidence you need to communicate effectively in English. You will improve your overall abilities in both spoken and written English, as well as your understanding of US culture. After completing your program, you will be better prepared to use English at work, in school, or among international friends.

What will my classes be like?
CELOP teachers use a variety of materials for instruction and practice in all essential skill areas: listening, speaking, reading, writing, grammar and vocabulary. Course materials may include textbooks, magazine and newspaper articles, the Internet, ESL software, radio and television programs, and movies.

Class activities in this concentration may include:

  • Participating in discussions on science and technology
  • Understanding and using sci/tech vocabulary
  • Developing research skills
  • Writing on sci/tech topics
  • Reading sci/tech articles from current sources
  • Presenting scientific concepts and observations
