Eric Ludgood (right), the managing editor of CNN International, visited BU on January 25 to present videotapes of his network's weekly television program Inside Africa to the University's African Presidential Archives and Research Center (APARC). Receiving the videotapes is APARC director Charles Stith, a former U.S. ambassador to Tanzania, who also is a special assistant to BU President Jon Westling. Stith said the gift was "a real coup" for the center, which was created last year to serve as a repository for papers of democratically elected African leaders and documents relating to them. Inside Africa was launched in 2000 and features in-depth stories about African business, culture, and politics. It is, Stith said, "one of the best, most systematic presentations of the complexity and political developments in Africa." CNN International, which is available to 160 million households outside the United States, has agreed to give videotapes of future segments to APARC. Ludgood described his network's dedication to covering Africa, despite the lack of a profitable advertising base there. "We [produce the show] every week for no reason other than it's the right thing to do," he said. "If we're going to cover Europe, and if we're going to cover Asia, we must cover Africa. You can't ignore the continent." Photo by Kalman Zabarsky
