He received his master’s and P.h.D from the University of Chicago. In addition to five books and over 130 peer-reviewed research articles, Professor Zaman has written extensively on innovation, refugee and global health in newspapers around the world. His newspaper columns have appeared in over 30 countries and have been translated into eight languages. He has won numerous awards for his teaching and research, the most recent being Guggenheim Fellowship (2020) for his work on antibiotic resistance in refugee camps.

Research Interests

Refugee and global health; Antimicrobial resistance; Access to healthcare in urban informal settlements and refugee camps; One Health; Mathematical Modeling of Infectious diseases in forcibly displaced communities.

Current Research

Current research in the Zaman lab uses multi-disciplinary approaches to improve health outcomes among refugees, internally displaced persons and stateless communities. Our research approaches use computational, experimental and field-based methods, along with strong partnership with scholars and researchers on the ground to understand the dynamics of disease in complex emergencies, refugee camps and urban informal settlements. We are interested in systems level improvement of health outcomes and work with scientists, social scientists, humanists, public health professionals and policy makers. Projects include understanding antimicrobial resistance in vulnerable communities, improving medicine quality and access, and developing robust solutions for equitable access to diagnostics. We are interested in developing ethically grounded, context-appropriate approaches (methodologies, programs, technologies and policies) to improve health outcomes among these forcibly displaced communities.

Selected Recent Publications

(For a complete list, see the Zaman Lab website)

Erin L.
