In exploring the meaning of <em>contrapasso<\/em> in Dante\u2019s <em>Inferno<\/em>, Kameen acknowledges the competing views of several scholars before staking out the intellectual territory of \u201ca middle ground\u201d between critics\u2019 claims. The essay demonstrates the indispensable importance of close reading\u2014of primary and secondary sources\u2014as a prelude to textual interpretation and the formation of academic argument: even though the critics\u2019 words seems right \u201cat first glance,\u201d he digs deeper to consider the limits and possibilities of the texts.
