In this course we focus on how highly specialized scientific information is presented to and interpreted by a general audience that does not have technical knowledge. By examining press releases, news articles, government guidelines, advertising, and social media, we explore how scientific information is disseminated to the U.S. public and uncover what it takes to be scientifically literate in a twenty-first-century world. Engagement with a variety of sources and practice in writing in a range of genres with particular attention to argumentation, prose style, and revision, informed by reflection and feedback, including individual conferences.
