{"id":14054,"date":"2019-08-20T12:20:42","date_gmt":"2019-08-20T16:20:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/writingprogram\/?page_id=14054"},"modified":"2019-08-30T14:13:38","modified_gmt":"2019-08-30T18:13:38","slug":"furmanek-instructor","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/writingprogram\/journal\/past-issues\/issue-11\/furmanek\/furmanek-instructor\/","title":{"rendered":"From the Instructor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><u>Introduction<\/u>:<br \/>\nHelpful and engaging <strong>title<\/strong> \u2013 establishes key terms and signals the central conceit of the paper: \u201cA Common Spirit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Addresses <strong>\u2018So what?\u2019 question<\/strong> early in the essay and elaborates on it effectively later in her conclusion.\u00a0 Lends relevance and consequence to a topic that may seem remote or idiosyncratic to the average reader.\u00a0 Establishes both historical and critical context for her analysis, marking out common ground for her readers.<\/p>\n<p>Crafts a clear but narrowly-defined <strong>problem<\/strong> to address, and sets off her own approach against the prevailing views of critics (a classic \u2018they say\/I say\u2019 approach).\u00a0 Effectively employs subordinate clauses that begin with conjunctions\/prepositional expressions: \u201cDespite\u2026\u201d \u201cThough\u2026\u201d\u00a0 \u201cWhile\u2026\u201d to immediately build the argumentative tension in her piece.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Claim\/Thesis<\/strong> is emphatic and concise.\u00a0 It falls at the end of the introduction and responds directly to the <strong>problem<\/strong> <strong>statement<\/strong> above.<\/p>\n<p><u>Body<\/u>:<br \/>\n<strong>Topic<\/strong> <strong>sentences<\/strong> set clear and distinct tasks\/arguments for each body paragraph.<\/p>\n<p>Effectively employs <strong>return<\/strong> <strong>sentences<\/strong> \u2013 sentences at or near the end of body paragraphs that connect analysis in that section to the overall argument in the essay.\u00a0 These <strong>return<\/strong> <strong>sentences<\/strong> help her maintain focus and build cohesion.\u00a0 She does this both argumentatively (by reinforcing claim\/thesis) and rhetorically (by returning to her previously-established key terms).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Frames<\/strong> <strong>quotations<\/strong> especially well by providing necessary context up-front and responding to\/engaging with quotations before moving on.<\/p>\n<p>Topic sentences at bottom of page 3 and middle of page 4 and top of page 6 illustrate strong <strong>transitions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><u>Conclusion<\/u>:<br \/>\nGreat model for concluding a piece of literary criticism, which for students can often feel divorced from everyday life or immediate concerns.\u00a0 Opens conclusion with a concise <strong>synopsis<\/strong> of core argument in essay and follows by addressing the <strong>\u2018So what?\u2019 question<\/strong>, adding consequence and relevance to her interpretation of Hemingway\u2019s novel.\u00a0 Her specific references to contemporary European politics and American culture wars are quite effective.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2014STEPHEN B.
