The first step in making sense of the processes and events that shape our dynamic Earth is to observe and analyze them. We observe the earth by collecting data on a variety of process at a variety of spatial scales. We analyze using visualization and modeling, statistical techniques and machine learning algorithms that can address and solve problems for resource management, environmental protection, and public health. My talk today is about mapping spatial data. We are witnessing a revolution in mapping and visualization, fueled by advances in geospatial technologies such as GIS (Geographic Information Science), remote sensing, high resolution imagery, web mapping, crowd sourced data, and apps. These technologies are enabling us to capture, process, and store and analyze spatial data as never before. Massive amounts of digital data are being collected from a growing number of satellites and sensors monitoring the earth, atmosphere and oceans. High resolution mapping enables users to visualize museums, homes and buildings. New apps such as Waze can provide real-time traffic data or help you find your friends location, or personalize trips. Maps have become ubiquitous in our lives, constantly updated and produced by many users not just experts. My talk will focus on the applications of these technologies in my research in the fields of environmental conservation and planning, public health, urban and business applications. In each application area, I will focus on the nature of spatial data, spatial uncertainty, privacy, and scale and resolution. I will end the talk discussing the future of mapping.
Sponsored by Dr. Ann E.
