\nFemale food activists in Italy are working to improve the quality of food, promote local producers, and educate others about good food. Can this public volunteer work promote more equal gender relations in Italian society? In this talk, Dr. Carole Counihan, Visiting Professor of Food Anthropology, will discuss her research, based on ethnographic interviews with Italian female food activists in Cagliari, the capital of the island region of Sardinia.\u00a0 Her research explores what these women are doing to change the food system, how they think about their actions, and what challenges they face.\u00a0 The talk considers their experiences against the backdrop of gender relations in Italian society where women have a long history of holding primary responsibility for cooking and other domestic work and have been disadvantaged in the workplace. Carole Counihan is Professor Emerita of Anthropology at Millersville University in Pennsylvania. She has a BA in history cum laude from Stanford University and a Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.\u00a0 Her research centers on food, culture, gender, and identity in the United States and Italy.\u00a0 Dr. Counihan has been a visiting professor at the University of Gastronomic Sciences in Italy since 2005, at Boston University since 2011, and at the University of Cagliari (Sardinia), Italy, in 2011.\u00a0 In 2009 she began a new ethnographic research project on food activism in Italy.
