Such concentrations speak to broader interests in literary translation, the imagination, subjectivity and the philosophy of form.<\/p>\n<p>Matt received his Ph.D. in Japanese Language from the University of California, Berkeley. His dissertation, \u201cThe Lyric Forms of the Literati Mind: Yosa Buson, Ema Saik\u014d, Masaoka Shiki, Natsume S\u014dseki,\u201d examines the transformation of lyric thinking in Japanese literati (<em>bunjin<\/em>) culture from the eighteenth century to the early twentieth century.\u00a0 He shows how Edo poet-painters Buson and Saik\u014d, and Meiji writers Shiki and S\u014dseki each fashion a lyric subjectivity constituted by the kinds of blending found in literati painting and poetry.<\/p>\n<p>Recent publications include \u201cBritish Romanticism in Classical Chinese: The Pastoral in Natsume S\u014dseki\u2019s <em>Kanshi<\/em>,\u201d in <em>Poetica <\/em>82 (December, 2014).<\/p>\n<p>Matt is currently working on transforming his dissertation into a book manuscript.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/wll\/files\/2018\/07\/Mewhinney.CV_.2019.pdf\">Matthew Mewhinney&#8217;s CV<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":9557,"template":"","_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/wll\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/profile\/11665"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/wll\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/profile"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/wll\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/profile"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/wll\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/9557"}],"version-history":[{"count":6,"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/wll\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/profile\/11665\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":12639,"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/wll\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/profile\/11665\/revisions\/12639"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/wll\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=11665"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
