A woman of mixed Syrian-German parentage stands in her Paris kitchen making kubah<\/em>, a Syrian meat dish, and recalling her encounter with the exiled Damascene medical worker and activist Ashraf. When Ashraf disappears, she goes on a labyrinthine journey in search of him that leads to encounters with some of Syria’s 2 million refugees and stirs deep ancestral memories. Written and directed by Amir Nizar Zuabi; conceived and performed, with live cooking onstage, by Paris-based Syrian-German actor and director Corinne Jaber. Boston premiere.<\/p>\n

The Students for Justice of Palestine are having an open mic next Thursday on the 14th at BU Central located in the basement of the GSU. The group will be hosting Palestinian Poet Remi Kanazi. The theme of the night is Resistance & Coexistence.<\/o:p><\/p>\n

11\/15. A Conversation about Rap across Cultures.<\/h4>
<\/p>\n

The Russian, German, Spanish and Arabic clusters of Global House will hold a discussion event about hip-hop and rap across different cultures. Each language cluster will show 1 minute of 1 or 2 music videos of their choosing. The audience will try to guess what the video is about, followed by the cluster whose video it is revealing the meaning of the song and talking a little bit about the artist. These videos will serve as the base of our discussion questions.<\/p>\n

This event aims to expand students’ comprehension of foreign cultures, as well as cultures related to their clusters. In the activity, they will compare and contrast hop-hop music in different cultures, thus engaging in cultural comparison and multicultural communication.<\/p>\n

Based in Berlin and Helsinki respectively, violinist Ashraf Kateb and pianist Hamsa Alwadi Juris have dedicated themselves to researching, recording, and performing contemporary classical music by Arab-world composers. This concert \u2013 part of a five-campus collaboration with Boston University, Yale, Brown, and Connecticut College \u2013 focuses on Syria, illuminating its rich prewar classical music scene. Kateb and Alwadi Juris will play selections (all US premieres) by Dia Succari, Solhi Al-Wadi (Hamsa Alwadi Juris\u2019 father), Zaid Jabri, Walid Al-Hajjar, and Boghos Gelalian.<\/p>\n

Fallou Ngom\u2019s new book re;eased om July entitled \u201cMuslims Beyond The Arab World, The Odyssey of \u2018Ajami and the Muridiyya\u201d demonstrates how ‘Ajami materials serve as essential resources of indigenous religious, socio-cultural, and historical knowledge necessary for understanding the spread of Islam and its many adaptations in sub-Saharan Africa and the Muslim world at large. It explores the role that ‘Ajami materials played in the rise of the Muridiyya as one of the most resilient, dynamic, and influential Sufi movements in sub-Saharan Africa. It uncovers the vital role Shaykh Ahmadu Bamba and the Ajami poets who followed him played in the formation and perpetuation of the current religious traditions of Muridiyya The text includes access to a companion website.<\/p>\n
