Liling Huang Wins Online Teaching Award For Higher Education
Senior Lecturer Liling Huang is the recipient of the Online Teaching Award for Higher Education from the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) Distance Learning SIG and Computer-Assisted Language Instruction Consortium (CALICO).
ACTFL’s DL SIG is a national special interest group that provides networking and information sharing on strategies, program models, and challenges facing distance learning educators. CALICO is an international organization dedicated to research and development in the use of computer technology in language learning: computer-assisted language learning (CALL). ACTFL’S DL SIG, in collaboration with CALICO, offers two annual awards for excellence in online language teaching (K–12 and Higher Education).
The award is typically presented in person but since ACTFL 2020 annual national conference will be held in a virtual environment, this year’s award was presented during ACTFL DL SIG’s online showcase on Oct. 21st. The chair of the ACTFL DL SIG invited Liling to record a video in acceptance of the award and highlighting some of her work in online language instruction. The video mentions the support from the deans, chairs, Chinese program convenors, directors of the summer term, and her colleagues. Liling expressed thanks to Dr. Amber Navarre and Dr. J-Jay Araullo, who she worked with in developing First Semester Chinese Online, and Mr. Joshua Mackler, Mr. David Charpentier, and Mr. Robert Heim, with whom she collaborated in developing the Second-semester Chinese online. The video also mentions some of her work including the online courses (LC111OL, LC112OL), the blended course (LC319), and another award-winning website of Chinese pragmatics.
WLL Chair, Margaret Litvin congratulates Liling, saying “This is wonderful recognition for [her] hard work” Congratulations, Liling!
