He studies how language and cognitive development are shaped by perceptual experience, language input, and modality.<\/p>\n<p>His current work spans three projects that investigate: 1) how early language skills relate to later language skills in deaf and hard of hearing children; 2) how early language planning relates to language outcomes in deaf and hard of hearing children; and 3) how iconicity influences sign language learning.<\/p>\n<p>He earned a PhD in Linguistics from Gallaudet University with a dissertation titled \u201cInvestigating relationships between L1 English reading comprehension, nonverbal working memory, and L2 ASL receptive comprehension in deaf and hard of hearing adults.\u201d He received a Doctoral Dissertation Research Improvement grant from the National Science Foundation for this work.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":18489,"template":"","_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/wheelock\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/profile\/84749"}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/wheelock\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/profile"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/wheelock\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/profile"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/wheelock\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/18489"}],"version-history":[{"count":2,"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/wheelock\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/profile\/84749\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":84819,"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/wheelock\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/profile\/84749\/revisions\/84819"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/wheelock\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=84749"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
