As the lead advisor to the program, Dashoush used her skills as a science educator to structure the academic content of the program, define learning objectives, and create tip sheets for parents to discuss the show\u2019s main lessons with their children. (BU Wheelock\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/wheelock\/profile\/v-scott-solberg\/\">Scott Solberg<\/a> also worked on the series as an advisor on the representation of careers and career development.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dashoush spoke to us about working on <em>Lyla in the Loop <\/em>and what she hopes viewers will take away from it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<section class=\"wp-block-editorial-q-and-a news-block-editorial-q-and-a\"><div class=\"wp-block-editorial-q-and-a-title\"><h2 class=\"wp-block-editorial-q-and-a-title-heading\">Q<span>&amp;<\/span>A<\/h2><h4 class=\"wp-block-editorial-q-and-a-title-subheading\"><\/h4><\/div>\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-editorial-q-and-a-question\"><span class=\"wp-block-editorial-q-and-a-name\">BU Wheelock:<\/span> <span class=\"wp-block-editorial-q-and-a-content\">As an advisor to <em>Lyla in the Loop<\/em>, what excites you most about working on the series? <\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-editorial-q-and-a-answer\"><span class=\"wp-block-editorial-q-and-a-name\">Nermeen Dashoush:<\/span> <span class=\"wp-block-editorial-q-and-a-content\">As a science educator, I\u2019m excited about seeing problem-solving, the design process, and computational thinking every day. It\u2019s also about the racial representation. <br><br>It\u2019s also funny and cute, and the characters are so joyful.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-editorial-q-and-a-question\"><span class=\"wp-block-editorial-q-and-a-name\">BU Wheelock:<\/span> <span class=\"wp-block-editorial-q-and-a-content\">What skills can children learn from watching <em>Lyla<\/em>?<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-editorial-q-and-a-answer\"><span class=\"wp-block-editorial-q-and-a-name\">Nermeen Dashoush:<\/span> <span class=\"wp-block-editorial-q-and-a-content\">Our main focus is on how to solve problems by breaking things down into parts and making them more manageable. We take computational thinking skills that are the precursor to computer science\u2014for example, algorithms and decomposition\u2014and present them in a way that\u2019s part of our everyday lives, since we all solve problems every day.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-editorial-q-and-a-question\"><span class=\"wp-block-editorial-q-and-a-name\">BU Wheelock:<\/span> <span class=\"wp-block-editorial-q-and-a-content\">There\u2019s a perception that studying science is a solitary activity. What does <em>Lyla <\/em>show kids about this notion?<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-editorial-q-and-a-answer\"><span class=\"wp-block-editorial-q-and-a-name\">Nermeen Dashoush:<\/span> <span class=\"wp-block-editorial-q-and-a-content\">The misconception that science is a solo process has to be broken in many ways. Science isn\u2019t a solo process; it\u2019s a social process. So we show how people interact to solve problems, like Lyla, her family, and her friends. We\u2019re working on it from the teacher ed perspective, but we also need to work on it in informal learning as well, such as in museums, on TV shows, and in technology.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-editorial-q-and-a-question\"><span class=\"wp-block-editorial-q-and-a-name\">BU Wheelock:<\/span> <span class=\"wp-block-editorial-q-and-a-content\"><em>Lyla<\/em> features a Black protagonist alongside a very diverse cast of family, friends, and neighbors. How did the team ensure such rich representation?<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-editorial-q-and-a-answer\"><span class=\"wp-block-editorial-q-and-a-name\">Nermeen Dashoush:<\/span> <span class=\"wp-block-editorial-q-and-a-content\">Lyla\u2019s family is Black, and her mother is Jamaican. We also have a Vietnamese family on the show. We wanted to make sure we captured authentic stories, voices, names, and the designs of homes in every step of the process. To help do that, we had a diversity, equity, and inclusion advisor. Our team was diverse behind the scenes, too: our lead writer is Black, and we have multiple Black writers.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-editorial-q-and-a-question\"><span class=\"wp-block-editorial-q-and-a-name\">BU Wheelock:<\/span> <span class=\"wp-block-editorial-q-and-a-content\">What impact is the diversity represented on the show having so far?<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-editorial-q-and-a-answer\"><span class=\"wp-block-editorial-q-and-a-name\">Nermeen Dashoush:<\/span> <span class=\"wp-block-editorial-q-and-a-content\">We\u2019ve heard from kids: \u201cShe looks like me,\u201d \u201cShe has my hair,\u201d and so on. My daughter, for example, recognizes that the characters have curly hair and sleep with bonnets. She said, \u201cShe has a bonnet just like me.\u201d The show is powerful in creating a mirror and window into a child\u2019s life that was really missing in kids\u2019 media.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-editorial-q-and-a-question\"><span class=\"wp-block-editorial-q-and-a-name\">BU Wheelock:<\/span> <span class=\"wp-block-editorial-q-and-a-content\">Are there any lessons in the work you\u2019re doing on <em>Lyla<\/em> for students working toward degrees in education?<\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-editorial-q-and-a-answer\"><span class=\"wp-block-editorial-q-and-a-name\">Nermeen Dashoush:<\/span> <span class=\"wp-block-editorial-q-and-a-content\">Learning doesn\u2019t only happen in the classroom. We can also use our degrees and expertise to influence informal learning spaces as well, such as technology and the media. When students learn about curriculum design or teacher education materials, they can transfer those skills to scripts, animation, illustrations, or family engagement material. <br><br>I used my skills in communicating concepts to parents through media, implementing learning objectives, developing lesson plans as an advisor to the show, and advising on multiple apps that are developed to accompany the series. I\u2019d love to see my students reading something like this and see how those skills from their degrees transfer.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/section>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"wp-block-editorial-relatedstories
