The project was based on a model developed by YPP, which trains high-school and college students to teach younger students math concepts. Also involved in the partnership were Boston Public Schools, Bootstrap (a company that crafts computer science modules for classrooms), and the <a href=\"https:\/\/earlcenter.bu.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Earl Center for Learning &amp; Innovation<\/a> at BU Wheelock.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The project tested a new research framework, based in the work of <a href=\"https:\/\/algebra.org\/wp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Algebra Project<\/a>, called the Model of Distributed Excellence, which is responsive to the needs of students from racial\/ethnic groups that are underrepresented in computer science.\u202fThey set out to understand how near-peer mentors (in this case, \u201cnear-peer\u201d refers to the closer-in-age college students working with high school students) offer important value when co-teaching with adult classroom teachers.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"wp-block-editorial-relatedstories alignright news-block-editorial-relatedstories\">\n\t\t<h3 class=\"wp-block-editorial-relatedstories-title\">Related<\/h3>\n\t\t<ul class=\"wp-block-editorial-relatedstories-list\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<li class=\"wp-block-editorial-relatedstories-list-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<article class=\"wp-block-editorial-relatedstories-article\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"wp-block-editorial-relatedstories-article-category\"><span>STEM<\/span><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"wp-block-editorial-relatedstories-article-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/wheelock\/news\/articles\/2023\/guiding-youth-to-create-change-through-stem\/\" class=\"wp-block-editorial-relatedstories-article-title-link\">Guiding Youth to Create Change through STEM<\/a><\/h4>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"wp-block-editorial-relatedstories-article-date\">February 10, 2023<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/article>\n\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<li class=\"wp-block-editorial-relatedstories-list-item\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<article class=\"wp-block-editorial-relatedstories-article\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"wp-block-editorial-relatedstories-article-category\"><span>STEM<\/span><\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h4 class=\"wp-block-editorial-relatedstories-article-title\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/wheelock\/news\/articles\/2024\/can-stem-prepare-students-to-make-a-difference\/\" class=\"wp-block-editorial-relatedstories-article-title-link\">Can STEM Prepare Students to Make a Difference?<\/a><\/h4>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"wp-block-editorial-relatedstories-article-date\">March 27, 2024<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/article>\n\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/ul>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p>Tucker-Raymond and Freeman recently published the study<sup> <\/sup>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/jcsi.redlands.edu\/articles\/10.26716\/jcsi.2023.9.18.38\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Near Peer Pedagogies for Culturally Sustaining Computer Science and Mathematics<\/a>,\u201d which evaluates the impacts of this approach<strong>. <\/strong>\u201cThe idea for this project was inspired by the popular African proverb, \u2018It takes a village to raise a child,\u2019\u201d says Freeman. \u201cOur goal was to illustrate how this proverb manifests within our work.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Freeman went on to explain the implications of this study. \u201cThe inclusion of near-peer mentors as instructors offers unique contributions and significantly enriches the implementation of the [original] Model of Excellence in ways that the adult teacher may not be able to do alone,\u201d he says.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking ahead, Freeman plans to disseminate the project\u2019s outcomes widely among teachers. He is developing a facilitator guide to create scalable products for classroom integration at no cost<strong>.&nbsp;<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reflecting on the project, Tucker-Raymond emphasized that the true credit belongs to the college students and teachers involved. \u201cOne thing Cliff always reminds me of is that it\u2019s not really our work,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s the work of the people, in this case, the college students and the teachers, that really counts.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Doctoral student Cliff Freeman, who is also the director of STEM Programs at the Young People\u2019s Project (YPP), and Eli Tucker-Raymond, a research associate professor at BU Wheelock, are working to build math teachers\u2019 capacity for teaching computer science.
