Panelists also suggested ways to approach affirmative action by focusing on the harm done to systemically marginalized student populations, rather than following the popular narrative of \u201cspecial treatment.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<div class=\"responsive-video responsive-youtube\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Thumbs on the Scale: The Future of Race, Legacy, &amp; Other Factors in Selective College Admissions\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/RlfZe5las2g?feature=oembed&#038;enablejsapi=1&#038;origin=https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/wheelock\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2>Highlights from the Event<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3>The impact of privilege<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>It is is inconceivable for me to still live in a world where we provide privileges to these kids to have access to institutions to Harvard, where they are seven times more likely to be admitted, where these kids make up one-third of the class\u2014 and to live in a world where they continue to have access to these opportunities, but low-income kids and kids of color overwhelmingly do not. <strong><em>That is a matter of basic fairness.<\/em><\/strong><\/p><cite>&nbsp;Iv\u00e1n Espinoza-Madrigal<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h3>Preferences in admissions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><p>We actually know how much your scores on MCAS and other state exams go down based upon the neighborhood you live in. . . .
