Winter & Spring Programming at the Wheelock Family Theater

The Wheelock Family Theater is looking forward to a busy spring season, anchored by two major musical productions: Ragtime, which will run from January 25th through February 17th, and James and the Giant Peach, which will run from April 12th through May 12th. “Our 38th season is all about the transformative power of storytelling,” says ArtisticDirector Emily Ranii. She notes that the characters in these productions seek to “find themselves through telling their own stories and, ultimately, change their worlds.”

The Theater will also host a Wheelock Alumni event on Sunday, May 5, where alums will enjoy the 2pm matinee of James and the Giant Peach. There will be a pre-show alumni reception at 1pm and Alumni will receive discounted tickets. Alumni who are interested in attending can email Kathie Hart, Assistant Director for School-Based Alumni Relations, at to receive a discount code.

Young actors will have the opportunity to take weekend and weeknight classes at the Wheelock Family Theater throughout winter and spring. The Theater’s diverse curriculum includes classes focused on character building, storytelling through song, improve, movement, and more, all designed for students at specific grade levels. Full details about winter and spring classes at the Theater are listed here.

The Theater will also offer classes and workshops to students over the major breaks in the academic calendar. During December’s intersession programming, there was a three-day play festival where students in grades 7-12 wrote, produced, and performed original plays within 72 hours. Programs will also run during February, March, and April breaks; you can find further information about school vacation programs here.

The Theater prides itself on being inclusive to audiences of all ages and ability. Select performances include ASL interpretation, open captioning, as well as audio description.
