SED Hosts Boston Mayoral Debate for Fall Convocation 2013
On Thursday, September 12th, 2013, Boston University School of Education (BUSED) hosted its 2013 Fall Convocation – a Boston mayoral debate.
Each year, BUSED holds its annual Fall Convocation ceremony in early September. Fall Convocation is a welcome event for the BUSED community. Students, faculty, staff, and alumni are invited for a discussion about important contemporary topics in the field of education. The annual event is organized by BUSED’s Office of Student Services.
This year, Boston is electing a new mayor, as Mayor Thomas Menino steps down after 20 years of service. In the election, education has become a highly discussed topic. To help students become more informed and involved with local politics, BUSED broke away from the traditional format of Fall Convocation, involving a book reading or movie screening, to host the mayoral debate.
The Fall Convocation mayoral debate was moderated by Dean Hardin Coleman, BUSED, and undergraduate student Alyssa Sarkis, SED ’14. Sarkis is also the head of the 2013 Fall Convocation planning committee. All twelve primary candidates for the office of mayor were invited to the debate, but only six were able to attend: Felix Arroyo, John Barros, Charles Clemons, Dan Conley, John Connolly, and Charles Yancey.
