Chang Receives Inaugural Margaret McGuire Earl Career Development Professorship

Michael Alan Chang, an assistant professor of language and literacy education at BU Wheelock, faculty fellow in the Faculty of Computing & Data Sciences (CDS), and assistant director of the Earl Center for Learning & Innovation, received the inaugural Margaret McGuire Earl Career Development Professorship.
The professorship was established by Sylvia Tailby Earl (Wheelock’54), in honor of her mother-in-law, Margaret McGuire Earl, who was a math educator. It recognizes early career faculty members at BU Wheelock for their contributions in education and supports the growth of excellence in research and scholarly work of the recipient within the community.
Sylvia Earl and her late husband Jim Earl previously endowed the Earl Center for Learning & Innovation as well as the Sylvia Earl Professorship.
Chang joined the BU Wheelock faculty in 2024. Combining his expertise in learning and computing, he focuses on advancing and discovering innovative AI-supported possibilities for teaching and learning. He leads and collaborates closely with members of the community including students, their families, and teachers to create meaningful educational experiences.
“I’m honored to receive this award and feel deeply appreciative of the generous support from the Earl family, and more broadly, from my colleagues in BU Wheelock and the Language & Literacy Education Department,” says Chang. “I am excited that this award will allow me to continue building relationships across BU Wheelock, Computing & Data Sciences, and Boston Public Schools to collaboratively imagine ethical and relational possibilities for AI and learning.”
