The University-Based Child and Family Policy Consortium, in collaboration with the Society for Research in Child Development, hosted a webinar on May 4, 2017 on Issues of Equity and Culture in Teaching. The webinar featured Associate Professor Dr. Stephanie Curenton, who discussed racial bias in the U.S. education system that spans disparities in resources to classroom interactions with children of color. She addressed the importance of incorporating culturally responsive, anti-bias frameworks into early childhood grades. A new observation measure to assess sociocultural equity in the classroom is also introduced as a tool to promote improvements at the classroom level.
