Dr. Nathan’s Article “Why Arts?” Published in The Educational Forum
“Why Arts?” was written by Dr. Linda F. Nathan and published in the September 2014 issue of The Educational Forum. The article explores the importance of a foundational curriculum in the arts for all students. Nathan believes that when the arts are at the center of the curriculum, students will be more engaged in school, develop skills of perseverance, and learn problem posing and problem solving skills.
Below is an excerpt from Nathan’s article:
Eliot Eisner (2002) reminded us in Ten Lesson the Arts Teach that, “The arts teach us to have experience we can have from no other source and through such experience to discover the range and variety of what we are capable of feeling.” But when I began teaching in the 1970s, I had never heard of any of the luminaries who would later have such an influence on me. I just knew I had to survive. The arts became my panacea.
