Dr. Katherine Frankel Co-Edits New Journal of Adolescent & Adult Literacy Department

Wheelock College of Education & Human Development faculty member Dr. Katherine K. Frankel, Assistant Professor of Literacy Education, and her colleague, Dr. Maneka D. Brooks, an Assistant Professor of Reading Education at Texas State University, are co-editors of the new Journal of Adolescent & Adult Literacy (JAAL) department, Beyond Struggling: Transforming Literacy Teaching.

The authors featured in these department columns share research-based and accessible instructional practices that support transformative literacy teaching and disrupt “struggling reader” and “struggling writer” labels.

Drs. Frankel and Brooks’ inaugural column, “Why the Struggling Reader Label Is Harmful (and What Educators Can Do About It),” appears in the July/August issue of JAAL (Volume 62, Issue 1).

The second column, “Collaborating with Youths as Co-Teachers in Literacy Learning,” was co-written by Dr. Frankel and Caitlin R. Murphy, Headmaster at English High School in Boston, and appears in the September/October issue of JAAL (Volume 62, Issue 2).

Be on the lookout for future columns in JAAL, volumes 62 and 63.
