FAQs for Incoming Students
We understand prior to arrival in DC you will likely have a lot of questions–we would too. Below you will find answers to most, if not all, of your questions. If you have any additional questions, please contact us.
Where is the BUDC housing located?
BUDC Students are housed in the Woodley Park neighborhood of Washington DC, steps from the metro. The residence hall, nicknamed The Debonair, was built in 2011 and is one metro stop from the BUDC office/classroom space.
What is the BUDC housing like?
You will be living on a floor with a total of six bedrooms, each able to fit up to two students in them. Each floor has a common area equipped with cable television, a full kitchen, washer/dryer, and an iron and ironing board. Each bedroom has its own heating and cooling system. The kitchens are stocked with cooking and dining equipment, major appliances, a coffee maker, a toaster, microwave, and a blender. Students are responsible for bringing their own set of sheets, towels, comforter, and pillow.
When will I get my housing assignment?
You will be sent the Debonair’s address and room number along with your roommate assignment prior to your departure and typically one week before you arrive in DC.
What will I do for food?
Students need to plan their own meals. There is ample cooking space on the floors and each floor comes with six burners, an oven, and two microwaves. There are also many different restaurants within walking distance of the residence hall.
Are Single Rooms Available?
The availability of single rooms varies by the semester. Students interested in applying for a single room are encouraged to fill out a single room request.
What do I bring?
While our rooms do have basic bedroom furniture, including a dresser, two extra-long twin beds, and a desk, they do not come with any bedding or towels. Students should make sure they bring bedding along with any personal affects, clothes, and school supplies. If you forget something, we have many stores within walking distance, including Target. A list of stores in the area can be found here.
Will I have access to a gym?
Unfortunately we do not have a gym in our facility. However, there are a number of gyms within walking distance, including Washington Sports Club. Students that would like more information on this are encourage to talk to visit the gym information section or talk to a staff member.
Do I have to use BUDC Furniture?
Students are not allowed to remove BUDC furniture from their room. All furniture in their room must stay there even if they have a single room. Students also assume financial responsibility for damages incurred to BUDC furnishings, their room, and the building as a whole that are deemed beyond normal wear and tear.
Can I move in early/stay later?
Students cannot move in prior to check-in and cannot stay beyond the move-out date.
Where do I ship my stuff?
Students will be given their mailing address when they are told their room number and roommate. Students should send packages, or anything that requires a signature, to the office.
How do I receive mail?
Each room has a mailbox. Students are welcome to have mail sent to their room’s box. Packages, or anything that requires a signature, should be sent to the office. When a package is received at the office, a staff member will e-mail the student notifying them that their is a package waiting for them.
Parking and Transportation
How do I get around DC?
DC has a great public transportation system–between the metro and buses, it is easy to get almost anywhere in the city. On the first day of the program, students will be given a metro card to use on the buses and subway that they can add money to. Additionally, the city is very walkable.
For more information, including public transit information, visit our getting around DC section of the website.
May I bring a bike?
You are allowed to bring a bike however it cannot be stored within the building. Students are responsible for any damage to the office or residence hall due to their bike.
May I bring a car?
BUDC encourages students not to bring a car–it really is not necessary and parking is a pain in DC. Additionally, we do not offer any parking at our facility.
Where will my classes meet?
Classes take place at our office which is located in Dupont circle, off the Metro’s Red Line. The office is about a 25 minute walk from the residence hall and is only one metro stop away.
When will my classes meet?
The majority of classes meet in the evenings, Monday-Thursday between 6:30 pm and 9:30 pm.
What classes will I take?
For fall and spring semesters, the majority of the tracks take two core courses and an elective in addition to their internship. During the summer, students will take one elective in addition to their internship. Details on course offerings will be communicated a few weeks before the start of the semester.
How do I register for classes?
Course registration will occur a few weeks before arriving in DC. You official courses typically do not appear in your student records until a couple of weeks into your DC semester. In the meantime, you might see a placeholder block of courses.
