Taking, or considering, a Spring 2021 leave of absence?
To assist students during the busy month of December, please find below information that will you useful for those who definitely need to arrange a Spring 2021 leave of absence, as well as for those who are considering this option.
Definitely taking a Spring 2021 leave of absence?
If you definitely need to arrange a Spring 2021 leave of absence, please proceed as follows:
- Review the information at www.bu.edu/usc/leaveandwithdrawal/
- Submit three online forms:
- Students on F-1/J-1 visas only: Contact your assigned ISSO advisor (http://www.bu.edu/isso/contact/student-advising/) to discuss the leave of absence. Your ISSO advisor must email the USC to confirm this discussion so we can approve your leave request.
- Schedule (https://usc1.youcanbook.me) and complete a (virtual) appointment with the USC staff during the period December 7 through December 21. In this meeting, we’ll review your paperwork and go over leave/withdrawal implications. We can also discuss return-from-leave steps, as appropriate and time permitting. If you are ready to confirm your leave of absence or withdrawal, we can update your spring records following this appointment.
Important Notes: If you arrange a leave of absence for the Spring 2021 semester, the spring portion of your 2020-21 residence license agreement will be canceled, and you must vacate your on-campus residence no later than 12 noon on Sunday, December 20, when residences close for Intersession.
Considering a Spring 2021 leave of absence?
If you are considering taking a leave of absence for Spring 2021, please carefully work through the steps below:
- Review the information at www.bu.edu/usc/leaveandwithdrawal/
- Submit two online forms:
- Students on F-1/J-1 visas only: Contact your assigned ISSO advisor (http://www.bu.edu/isso/contact/student-advising/) to discuss the leave of absence. Your ISSO advisor must email the USC to confirm this discussion so we can approve your leave request.
- Schedule (https://usc1.youcanbook.me) and complete a (virtual) appointment with the USC staff during the period December 7 through December 21. In this meeting, we’ll review your paperwork; we can also discuss alternates to a leave or withdrawal or return-from-leave steps, as appropriate and time permitting. If you are still considering a leave at the end of this meeting, we’ll discuss the timing for completion of Steps 5 and 6, below.
- If you decide to arrange a Spring 2021 leave of absence, submit the third online form:
- Email the USC (usc@bu.edu) either way–to confirm receipt of your official request form, or to alert us that you’ve decided not to proceed with a Spring 2021 leave or withdrawal.
Important Notes:
- You should check out of your on-campus residence by Sunday, December 20 at noon, even if you are only considering a Spring 2021 leave of absence. Students must have a valid enrollment status and badge, and be compliant with all and safety protocols to access campus after Fall 2020 final exams end and on-campus residences close on December 20.
- If you vacate your residence (complete room check-out) in December but don’t proceed with an official leave of absence request over the winter break (i.e. you are remaining enrolled for the Spring 2021 semester), then you will be able to sign up for a January move-in slot, and can resume campus access and move back into your assigned residence, at that point.
