{"id":18198,"date":"2023-01-12T15:11:28","date_gmt":"2023-01-12T20:11:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/urop\/?post_type=profile&#038;p=18198"},"modified":"2024-12-04T13:17:06","modified_gmt":"2024-12-04T18:17:06","slug":"marshal-dong","status":"publish","type":"profile","link":"https:\/\/www.bu.edu\/urop\/profile\/marshal-dong\/","title":{"rendered":"Marshal Dong"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Major and Minor: <\/strong>Physics\/CS, BusinessJapanese<\/p>\n<p><strong>Area of Research: <\/strong>Digital Humanities<\/p>\n<p><strong>Faculty Mentor: <\/strong>Keith Vincent<\/p>\n<p><strong>How did you get involved in research?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Took a Japanese literature class with Prof. Vincent and got invited to help him with his project.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How did you meet your mentor?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>By taking his class (LJ480).<\/p>\n<p><strong>What has your UROP experience taught you?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>How to self-learn skills (namely React and Neo4j), how to work independently.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How has this experience helped you with non-research related things at BU?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I developed a greater appreciation of Japanese literature and poetry, which strengthened my belief that a Japanese minor is worth the time and effort.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What does a day in your research life look like?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Coffee, look at the list of things to be done, try a few things, think about why things don&#8217;t work, coffee, look up documentations\/stackoverflow\/ChatGPT, make things work, coffee, update my log, commit.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What advice would you give to someone interested in UROP?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Be proactive and accountable. Our project started when Professor Vincent asked me whether I could fix a WordPress site. Although I was rusty with JavaScript, I quickly brought the site back online, then the small bugfix became a full-fledged web application and database development project, and I taught myself React and Neo4j.
